When my kids were young, they used to enter the magical world of Harry Potter by reading all the books and watching all the movies. They joined the three wizarding friends up until they were older, but they especially enjoyed the trio who shared such a bond with each other in their younger days.
Nel recently worked on a project in her home - a Harry Potter nook for Mia. She had wanted to do this little "home improvement" project since they moved in last year and she discovered the closet under the stairs. This little space sparked her imagination. She thought it was the perfect time to build a Gryffindor common room. It was used by the previous owner as an ordinary storage closet, so there was a lot of work to do. She started by ripping out the original carpet and installing black and white carpet tiles to make the floor look like the chess board from the first Harry Potter book, the Scorcerer's Stone. She bought a wizard chess set to complete the look and added a couple more Harry Potter themed games. She hung battery powered floating candles from the ceiling and stuffed a red velvet chair with a gold plush blanket into the corner. And finally, she stacked a few Harry Potter books next to two house mugs in a vintage suitcase for the reading nook. Mia was so excited to see it, and her and Francesca will have many fun times sharing this space in the years to come. Here are some pictures of the work in progress until the project was finished.
Nel and Jess ringing in the new year.
My Christmas stuff is put away, and I kept a few white things out with a pop of blue for the new year. I got this glass bowl for Christmas, and I think it's so neat.
My son made a big pot of jambalaya for the new year with sausage, shrimp, and rice, and I think it was his best batch yet.
Had to fill out some paperwork, and it was the kind that asks questions from 20 years ago, really? I try to live in the moment, and dates are hard to remember if I don't write them down. Most of the time I do, but sometimes we forget or they get tossed out. After, I went for a ride to clear my head and see the views in town, but I stopped first to get some teriyaki wings at the deli. They just made them.
I will always love this tree carved with a face on it.
I saw a family of deer on the edge of the highway, and another one laying on the side of the road. It breaks my heart when they get hit, as I have become quite close to this special animal up here.
I hope the new year is being good to you so far. Have a wonderful week.

Nel worked magic, she did a great job.
I love jambalaya, it looks delicious.
Wish you a wonderful new week. :)
Well done, Nel! Carson is getting into Harry Potter -- the movies so far -- and I'm glad it seems to be making a resurgence (not that it ever went away but I'm now seeing puzzles, legos, games). His dad has all the books so when he gets a little better reading, I have a feeling he'll dig in. (They're so big they look a little overwhelming!)
Jambalaya -- now THAT is a fabulous New Year's meal. I love it and this looks like an excellent recipe. And love those deer, too. I also feel sad when I see them hit.
Have a wonderful week,Sheri!
I am saddened as well when I see these precious animals in the side of the road.
Wow a lot of creativity went in to make that Harry Potter room. I’ve never seen or read Harry Potter. I’m thinking it might be similar to CS Lewis, the Chronicles of Narnia or J. R. R. Tolkien‘s the Hobbit.
Love that face in the tree trunk!
What a beautiful bowl you received at Christmas! Freshly cooked chicken wings… oh my, that sounds so good. jambalaya Is not something I can eat due to the shrimp but I’m sure it was quite tasty.
Have a beautiful week, Neighbor. Looks like sunshine and warmer temperatures for our part of the world. 🌍
Have a beautiful day. Never lose the magic.

Looks like your daughter did an excellent job creating a special place for Mia...the jambalaya sounds wonderful. Yes it always makes me sad too when I see a deer alongside of the road. We have so many in our area...poor things. Well hope you have a great start to your New Year. Hugs!
The nook is amazing.. your daughter did a great job.
I see an old Native American woman in your tree bark.
Buen espacio, para que disfruten los niños.
Feliz Año Nuevo.
Nel did a fabulous job - she could use it herself! lol. It was not my kid's generation for Harry Potter so I don't know a whole lot about it.
Your daughter's faces have such different shapes - both beautiful.
Was the Jambalaya - spicy? Teriyaki wings fresh looked so good.
I hate paperwork asking the past - I don't like it either.
Who carved that tree? Who is it?
When we went to Ohio, I can't tell you how many dead deer we saw on the side of the road. It was horrible.
I love that last quote - ah, if only I could remember to turn on the light.
Oh my gosh! The Nook is so awesome!! I would never have been able to think of how to arrange these neat Potter things in it. And the floating candles! I did not even know you can buy them!! And she made a tiny space look so much bigger! Your bowl is beautiful. We drive past deer that have been hit all the time. It is sad, and also a danger to the drivers.
The Harry Potter corner looks beautiful.
I just watched the first part of the film again for New Years because I like it so much. What a great story for young and old all over the world.
Best wishes from Viola. I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy 2025.
Happy New Year!
Oh that nook is wonderful. My boys would love it, even today as adults. :-)
Me too. It is a perfect place to read, doodle, write, and more.

Nel has done a wonderful job creating a wonderful reading space for all that enter this sweet spot under the stairs! Love the floating candles.
The jambalaya looks delicious! How nice that your son is so talented in the kitchen.
Sorry to hear about that beautiful deer. There are so many that meet this end.
Have a happy week!
Hey there Sheri....Oh my..Nel outdid herself with this adorable little nook..I know Mia was so excited and I'm guessing she will spend a lot of time reading in this magical room...The hanging candles are perfect and the FLOOR! Great picture of the girls with their 2025 glasses on....Beautiful ladies. Well...now I am hungry for some of that delicious looking jambalaya. Made my tummy growl! What a neat carving in the old tree...someone is pretty talented. Okay....I have to admit, I have never read a Harry Potter book nor have I seen one of the movies.....Yikes...I need to do better.... Enjoy a wonderful week....we will be having COLD weather and maybe snow..
Hi Sherry
the room is fantastic,
I wish we could all keep the child in us!
Have a beautiful happy and lucky year
What an absolutely magical transformation! The Harry Potter nook sounds like a perfect little getaway for Mia, blending cozy reading space with a dash of wizarding wonder. I love how Nel brought the Gryffindor common room to life, from the chessboard floor to the floating candles—such thoughtful details! I’m sure Mia must be thrilled with the space, and it’s wonderful that it will be a place for her and Francesca to make memories together. It’s amazing how a little creativity can turn an ordinary closet into a portal to Hogwarts!
That nook is so cool! Our kids never really got into Harry Potter but they do read.
Wow, what clever daughters you have. The Harry Potter space is so beautiful, well designed and a delight for the girls. Your glass bowl is really beautiful, and will always look good on display. What a beautiful photo of the deer. I love them too. There are some around our area, but I have only once seen one. They mostly roam at night. Happy new Year, Sheri.
The Harry Potter Nook is so wonderfully creative. Who wouldn't love having a nook like that! My grandkids and son were/are avid Harry Potter readers. Yes, it is sad to see the deer hit by cars. so sad. lovely post . Happy New year.
The Harry Potter nook you created for Mia is so cool!
I love the chessboard floor and the floating candles.
The jambalaya sounds amazing too.
