Give A Little Whistle

When my brother found this house in the mountains, he didn't know that this was close to my mother-in-law's birth place.  I didn't realize it myself at first until I figured out the areas.  She retired in the mountains at a different location in northern California, but she was born and raised here.

I saw how she lived a simple life in her cabin-style home, and I told myself that I wanted to live that way also as I aged.  She had a garden, one of them was filled with daisies, good neighbors, and a house she loved.

It's hard to explain what it's like living in the mountains until you experience it yourself.  There is a peace that envelopes you like no other place I've lived.  People seem to take the time to look out for one another.  While I was at the creek, a big white truck drove by, and the man rolled down his window and said, "are you Ok?"  I replied, "Yes, thank you, I'm just praying."  And with a big smile, he said, "Ok!" and was on his way.  I was also taking pictures.....of the tall trees that were right in front of me,

and ones that look like tiny Christmas trees.

I saw a note recently that a dear blog friend wrote, and with it she said that "this is our time."  The other day I was reading a letter that my mother-in-law wrote.  Her writing was so graceful, and I was surprised to see the words she wrote in her letter, "Everyone has their own time."

So, on my drive home from the creek, I see the majestic mountain before my eyes.  I realize this is where I'm supposed to be, and this is my time.

I feel my mother-in-law up here - in her area.  And I stop to think about her.  She was so generous, and whenever I visited her, she always gave me something to take home.

So, I'm thankful for the rain that came here recently,

for the pretty drives,

that my in-laws are not far away, and that my son is close by and walks these same woods and feels peace, as he just did the other day when it was raining.

My mother-in-law's resting place isn't the area where she retired, it's here, in the area she was born and raised.  The last letter she wrote me was actually just a few years before she passed, and as I was reading it, a smile shone brightly on my face, as she said, "So, I will be with you in my heart.  Give a little whistle!"

Oh mu gosh this brought me so many feelings.
First of all I am happy for you - I want to find my time and I sincerely feel you have and I am so happy for you!
So I feel happy and I know that feeling and I want it - so I admit I am a bit jealous too - maybe my day will come too. lol
You can just be you. Love it.

That was a beautiful post - She sounds like a wise woman. I love the mountains too - although we’re in the foothill side of the valley, every chance we get we’re driving up to the mountains. My folks used to live in a small town called Shingletown on the way to Lassen. Had they never sold out, I would have inherited that property instead of the one I’m living in now. But I do believe I am where I should be as well. My 2 sons are near me and it all worked out as we all transitioned out of the bay area.

Ah, what a lovely post! Sounds like you had a wonderful mother-in-law. I did too. She passed almost 4 years ago, and I still miss her. Especially now that I am a grandmother myself. She was the such an amazing grandmother for my kids! Not every woman can say they had a great mother-in-law. Those of us who can, are indeed blessed.

Love,
Patti

What a sweet post. It sounds like you had a wonderful MIL. I barely got to know Clint's mom as she passed away a few months after we started dating. Your pictures are always so pretty and perfect. You definitely live in a beautiful place.

This is the most beautiful post. I'm so glad you have found the right place for you. It's certainly beautiful. And meaningful. You sound so very happy, contented, quietly joyful, which I think is the best kind. It's very real and deep. And this makes me very happy to know you have found this heaven on earth for your home.

Its amazing how so many things come around to connect with our lives in so many ways. That is so neat and amazing that the house you moved in to was where you mom in law was born and raised. Totally cool. I love that you have seemed to have found your SPOT, your place. Wow...I love that. I am sure your mother in law knows where you are, knows that you are fitting in and knows that you are caring for her place of birth. NICE....

I love your post Sheri. It is wonderful you have the letters your Mother in Law wrote to you and you have the memories. I am sure she is with you in spirit. I always feel that way with my family who has passed. The mountains are so beautiful with the snow on them. I wish we had more, but I will take what we can get. I heard we may get some rain here this week. Have a great week!

"This is our time" dear friend, to live to our fullest. This is the only life we have; that latter phrase may sound to trite, too used up but maybe because it's TRUE. Whether you are in the mountains, by the sea, a lake or in the suburbs, there is always something to remind us of someone we love. How gorgeous this is.

Adorable post...I am glad you are happy living in this beautiful and peaceful place. My mother in law died almost two years ago. She had Alzheimer disease for a long time. I usually visited her twice a week. I have good remembrances too... Blessings to you.

Enjoy every moment!

And please, keep sharing them!

Aw, Sheri! This put a big lump in my throat! I grew up on top of a mountain and we could see seven counties from our farmhouse. I do miss the mountains sometimes. One of the things I loved was the sound of train whistles down in the valley. We could hear them clearly on cold winter nights. Your MIL sounds like she was a wonderful, wonderful person. What a blessing to have had her in your life. xo Diana

Ah Sheri I have been catching up on your posts. Have missed reading them. Your lemon cake looks so delicious. I always think of spring when I make a lemon dessert. Lemon Meringue Pie was my Mom's favorite. Haven't made one since she passed away. Either made it for her on Easter or her birthday in April.
Your photos of winter in the mountains is so gorgeous. This last post you shared so touched my heart. Yes friend it is our time. From the book of Esther ..."and who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this." Hope your time is being blessed today, sweet friend. Hugs!

Hi Sheri, this is a beautiful area! It seems like you had a special connection with your Mother-in-Law. The brooch is beautiful! I enjoyed this area immensely through your photos and those daisies are gorgeous. (How kind of the man to stop to see if you are okay.) I would love nothing better than to live in the mountains. I feel them calling to me all the time and find them very spiritual. My other-half on the other hand is a city boy and we do visit them when we can. Even though I wasn’t borne in the mountains, when I visit them I always feel like I am going home. A very touching ending to your post today. I loved it all. Thank you!

I love this post. I live in the mountains of NH and love the peace and serenity of it. We moved here from the seacoast of Maine over 30 years ago. While the ocean is lovely the crowds are not. I have talked to my husband about moving back as we retire. He just looks at me and says, "and give up all this?" He is so right.
