Some Holiday Cheer

My brother-in-law had to come into town, and he stopped by for a visit.  I always like it when he stops by cause he's good company, and he always brings me a goodie or two.....or five.  ; )  He brought over some spices for meat, some salsa, and a turkey!  My sister-in-law also sent me a throw.  I've been wanting a red plaid throw, and that was thoughtful of her.

I've been cooking for many years, and although I do well, I have to say that my kids cook wonderfully.  My son used the meat spices a few days later and rubbed them into some pork ribs.  They were sooooo good.

I made my brother-in-law a cup of coffee, and we had a nice chat.  Now, I've known this family since I was 16, and we go way back.  He told me stories of old, and remembers things about my family that even I forgot.  He has a sharp memory, just like my middle brother does.  He remembers going over my parents' house and my mom cooking Venison steaks for all and string beans with tomatoes and onions.  I forgot about my mom's string beans, they sure were good.  My mom and dad were always gracious to company.

My dad used to make us try everything, from Venison to Tripe, which is sometimes added to Menudo.  I will not eat Venison any more.  Since living in the mountains, the deer are my friends now haha.

When the heavy rains came last month, my brother-in-law brought over a lantern in case we had a power outage.  It's a sturdy one that lights up a room.

We didn't have one then, but last week we did, and I was glad to have this lantern handy.  Candles are fine for an outage that lasts for an hour or so, but this was a seven hour power outage that went into the night, and it was cooooold.  Thankfully, the heater my brother installed warmed me up after it was over.

Salsa from the stores is good, but I made a homemade salsa over the weekend with tortilla chips.

I couldn't find the traditional Martinelli's Sparkling Cider that we have for Thanksgiving, but I did find this at the store.  Have never tried it, any thoughts about it?

I enjoy watching The Pioneer Woman show, and love some of her kitchen items as well.  When I was at the grocery store, I picked up a jar of this to add to my spaghetti.  It was so delicious.

I gave my brother-in-law this Panettone to take home to my sister-in-law.  They are really good, and that will be my gift to family this year.  I gave my neighbor one also.  My in-laws brought some holiday cheer to my home last week, and that meant a lot to me.

I just realized this post has a lot of food in it, but I did tell you that I love food, and it seems to taste better during the holidays, doesn't it?  You know I have a thing for gnomes - I saw this coffee cup at the store and just had to bring this fellow home.  I love the original ginger snaps dipped in coffee also.

A pleasant Thanksgiving to you all.

I love food too so this is right up my alley. :) I love the gnome cup - it is so cute. I have never seen one before.
I have never tried that juice before but it looks good.
I like the Pioneer Women too but haven't tried her spaghetti sauce.
Your salsa looks so good - you must be a good chef to cut those items up so small - I have a hard time doing that.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Panetone makes the best French Toast. I guess it should be "Italian" toast! Isn't it wonderful to have/know someone who has known you most of your life, knows stories you can remember or relate to and who knew and knows your family? It's really special. I have precious few of those anymore. It's a treasure. And what a generous visitor. Love your throw and I'm sure all the spices and such are delicious. I know what you mean about the venison. It's not my favorite but more to the point, I see my deer friends faces when I have it -- so I don't!

What a dear brother in law. I use to work at a bread bakery when I was in high school. They made their own Panettone bread for the holidays. The owners were Italian. I have to say I never tried it. I was not into bread with fruit inside. (-: I do however love sourdough and other french breads. I am glad you had the lantern. I hate power outages. Enjoy your week Sheri!

What a lovely thoughtful brother-in-law bearing gifts! I love the pretty throw! I always have one on my lap this time of year. Your salsa looks delicious, Sheri. My children are very good cooks as well and I've learned many new ways of cooking things from them. The ribs your son made look wonderful. I have some in my crockpot right now. Happy Thanksgiving, my friend! Have a wonderful week.

It sounds like you have a wonderful family. Nice to get all those goodies from your brother-in-law. Nothing wrong with all the food in your post. We all love to eat, especially during this time of year. Your son's pork ribs looked amazing I have to say. Funny you showed those ginger snaps at the end of your post. I was having a cup of coffee and pumpkin ginger snaps while reading your blog. Happy Thanksgiving!

I have a throw just like that - it came from Canada, and is beautifully warm. Twins! This is the season when we think a lot about food - I am inspired by your home made salsa, yum. Happy Thanksgiving, dear Sheri.

Oh you know I love your pics especially your food pic here.
You know talking to someone who you've known for years
is great because you know things common to both of you
and recalling them is just heartwarming, like the talk you had with
your brother in law. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Sheri ♥

Your homemade salsa looks delicious! Care to share the recipe? This looks like something I'd like to try - I especially like the fesh avocado on top of it.

Your brother-in-law is a blessing! And good company, too. So nice to have company; I miss friends and family now gone or far away. I love that you got to sit down, each with a cup of coffee, and reminisce! I smiled that you no longer eat venison, as the deer are your friends. They are so beautiful, aren't they? So graceful. I love the gnome mug! And the buffalo check throw is just the thing to make a room look so cabin-cozy! I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving. You really have a good recipe with that salsa con aguacate!

Dear Sheri it is so wonderful when we can sit down and enjoy time with loved ones who have known us for many years. I adore your plaid throw...it would be a favorite of mine too. Love your gnome cup but much more interested in those ginger cookies :)!! Can I come share a cup of something hot and munch on one of those sweets? I am sure we would have them gone in no time with much conversation and laughter. Hugs!

That sounds like such a fun visit with your brother-in-law. I was never that close with my brothers-in-law, but more because they were quite a bit older. I liked them all, and Roger really liked them. Two of them were funny...but did not see them real often either. But they were all good guys.

I like you mug...it is so cute.

So nice that your brother-in-law came to visit, Sheri. Sharing old stories and reminisces are a rare pleasure and one of the gifts of long friendships. I love that you share food gifts, too. I've never seen the Pioneer Woman sauce - I'll have to look for it. The little jar is charming. My daughter buys me pieces from her cookware and dishware for my birthday every year. Your mug is really cute. Glad that you have the lantern for the power outages. A way of life in the mountains during winter! We've lost power 3 times already in the last few weeks. I love your snuggly throw and the bread looks really delicious. Now I am hungry - need to go raid the fridge! haha! Sending hugs xx K

The lantern looks like a great gift if you have frequent power outages! I'm glad it came in handy, I bet that cosy throw did then too :)

We have been lucky this spring - while there have been a lot of storms so far none have knocked out our power so hopefully that lucky streak continues until storm season is over!

Hope that you had a great weekend and your week is off to a good start!
