A New School Year

We are in the middle of Summer, or shall I say the end, and last week wasn't as hot as the weeks before.  It has been a mellow Summer lately.  I've noticed a change in the light of day also, and I think Fall will be here before we know it.  I have been thinking of my daughters, as school is starting up again.   Nel is teaching her college students this Fall, but her class in online, and Jess will teach her elementary students in the classroom this school year.  I think they have one of the oldest and most valued professions - being a teacher and shaping young minds to love learning is truly special.

One day last week, I looked across the street and saw an incredible sighting - a deer was standing in my neighbor's yard.  I quickly got my camera and went outside.  I tried to slowly take a picture, but was too excited, and it ran right past me and into the woods.  It was big and strong, and I was surprised to see that it was a Buck!

These were taken in my front yard.  I think this is a Robin, but not sure.

Oh, sometimes I will look over and see a pink rose growing in my garden, and it makes me smile.  They aren't always like this; sometimes they turn out light, but this one was just right.

There was a farmer's market in my town at the end of July.  Me and my son happened to be in town that day.  I've been craving pecan pie, and when he saw they were selling mini pies, he went over and bought a pecan pie.   Oh.my.gosh. it was the best.

The creek, end of Summer.

A cow farm near the creek.

There is a drive-in that's up the street from my house with a big tree that stands to the right of it, and someone carved a face on the tree.   It's so cool and artistic, and I've been wanting to take a picture of it and finally did.

I can tell Summer is almost over, and I'm glad.  Too hot for me.  I am already starting to see Fall in little ways, and I am curious what it will be like here in the mountains.

Hi, Sheri! Yes, summer is not my favorite season, either, though all these lovely blossoms seem to brighten things up very nicely! Today is the first day of school - a half-day - in our local county. This is the 18th year I will not begin the school year in a classroom as I retired at the end of the school year in 2003. Sending the best of wishes to the teachers in your family as they begin their responsibilities for guiding students through learning!

I have to say summer is my LEAST favorite season - but unlike you - we are only half way through. It is still hot and probably will be hot until October!

So Nel is virtual? Andy will start back college in person as far as I know right now.

Kelly is like Jess - in fact she started back with the kids last week!

So the little one in the school room - what kind of sofa is that called? I have been looking for one for years and just don't know what to look up.

The colors are so beautiful all around you. That pie looked good.

Pecan pie! It is a skill to make good pecan pie. Adding chocolate chips is a nice variation.

I love the tree carving!! And they chose the perfect place on the trunk to make it. You have beautiful nature photos. Your pink rose is perfect, and perfectly beautiful. How wonderful to have a creek nearby! The Petunias are lovely. Do you know what the little yellow flowers are?

I know you are very proud of your daughters and their teaching positions. I was bashful and did not like school very much but I always loved the end of summer and fall. It is nice to see photos of the sights around your home and town. The buck, the roses, the wood carving, and the creek. It will be interesting to see how your different seasons compare. The pecan pie your son purchased looks so good. That is a favorite of mine along with a cup of coffee.❤️

That tree is amazing and it looks like full summer there. We are hot here this week and will stay that way for awhile longer. Seeing that pecan pie makes me wish I could eat sugar. But we did stop in Georgia and get pecans at a packing plant and they are very yummy to snack on! Enjoy your Monday!

I'm excited to see Fall approaching your mountains, Sheri. We are still having hot weather, but subtle changes can still be seen. I wish your teaching daughters a wonderful school year. Our county began school today and it seems early to me as my own children started school after Labor Day back in the day. I always love seeing your beautiful photos, especially the lovely roses! Have a happy week, my friend.

I like that many of us are noticing the subtle changes toward autumn. Love all the pics! That pink rose is so beautiful! Oh, and my does that pecan pie look luscious! 🤤 I can see why you were excited! I hope Nel has a good year this year. That CRT stuff seems to be infiltrating every learning institution out of nowhere. I hope she isn't pressured to push it. We've seen some bucks here, too. So cool! Take care, my dear!

Thank you for sharing your story about the buck, what a great sighting.

Yes, I am also noticing the light shortening during the day. Still some hot days to come though.
Best wishes to both daughters as they begin a new school year.

What lovely photos, Sheri. You live in just beautiful territory. I am noticing the light, too. It's almost 9 and nearly dark and a month ago, it was light-ish till 10:15. I think that last bird photo was a bluebird. I've yet to see one and would love to! Lucky you!

I enjoyed all the photos. The carving in the tree is very creative. I think that maybe a grossbeak bird. Pecan pie is so yummy. It was my Dad's favorite.
Best wishes to your daughters as they go back to school.

Good morning dear and talented photographer!

Yup, "back to school" is in the morning air here too. It grew very hot and humid yesterday, however, but the mornings are so delicious with the promise of change.

That IS a robin and they are among my favorites here. You got a great butt shot of that BUCK! LOL

Well dear heart, your neck of the woods is beautiful. I love those split rail fences and teeny wildflowers. They whisper, "Farewell, summer..."

Great series of photos! Such a lovely variety.

Our summer has been surprisingly mellow with the exception of a few days when it was really hot. ost of our mornings have been foggy which is good moisture-wise and lowers the danger of wildfires a bit. A couple days we got the smoke from the Dixie Fire, but then the wind shifted again. I really hope we will be spared by fires this year... I do see some signs of fall as well, due to the lack of water.
The bird in the tree is not a robin (different beack) but a Black-headed Grosbeak. They're beautiful birds who spend their summers in California (among other places).

By the way, that buck is pretty impressive! It reminds me of the buck I once saw in the driveway across from our home - he didn't mind me at all and just kept lying there, watching me. Those are wonderful moments.

It looks like your mountain home attracts such wonderful wildlife. Are not deer just one of the loveliest creatures God made?? Wondering who carved that cute face in the tree?? Someone certainly has talent. Your pink rose is gorgeous. Cannot believe school is starting next week...that makes one feel summer is over. I liked it when we got out Memorial Day and didn't go back until the Tues. after Labor Day. Guess that tells my age😊! Have a great end to your week. Hugs

Lovely post. As Jeanie points out above (kudos to her) the last bird is a recently fledged Western Bluebird. Great sighting! And the pecan pie looks decadent. Hope you saved a slice for me!

So many wonderful photos to look at and topics to think about.
Teaching, which i did for four decades is really about the outcome not the income. Good teachers invest so much of themselves. I'm sure you are proud of your gilrs. That little dollon the reading couch is precicous.

We have not had a lot of really, really hot temps but the last two days have been unreal. I am SO ready for fall. Before pics. So nice to have two teachers like you do. That is cool. Takes a special person to do that. The carving is GREAT. And the buck was a nice young dude.

Lovely flowers! I am ready for fall, although it has been non stop rain here so it keeps the temps lower. Fall is going to be so pretty in the mountains!

Teachers have a huge job especially in todays world. The heat has been brutal and I look forward to cooler temps. But then I know the snow will not be far behind. Your phoots are so lovely. The flowers too. Thank you for sharing.

I love the pics you take,
so simple yet conveys in me a wonderful stillness.
Teachers need a lot of patience
and to study, even more than their students.
I used to teach in Computer Science in college
and I just can't keep up with the fast technology
even then.

All the pictures are beautiful. And of course, I love the wildflowers and the
fields. Your beautiful blog has always been a blessing in my life. And the nice comments you leave. I haven't posted much in awhile..my husband was very ill for a long time and I was kept busy caring for him.I lost him in June, along with my best friend and 5 other friends..all in one week. Life has changed so much, but I am still looking up and still trusting God.
Many blessings your way..you and your beautiful family!
