Back To School........Already

School is about to start already for the kids in my area, and I feel for them, as it's still pretty hot out.  Remember those cute clothes we wore the first couple weeks of school?  My mom took me school shopping to buy a couple dresses, shirts, socks, and a pair of shoes.  She always went to JC Penney, and I was so excited to get a few new outfits, and began to plan my wardrobe for the first week of school.

My mom's choice of cereal was corn flakes and cheerios, that's it.  She also made a warm bowl of oatmeal sometimes before school.  I remember going over to my friend, Tina's house, and her cupboard was filled with an assortment of cereals.  It was a feast for the eyes.  She had five siblings in her family as well.  I still eat corn flakes and cheerios to this day and enjoy its wholesome goodness.

I always wanted a red plaid lunch pail, but my mom packed us a brown bag lunch every day with bologna sandwiches or tuna fish sandwiches, fruit, and maybe chips.

The school was right up the road from my house, so I walked there every day and home again.

Would you believe Nel and Jess went to the same school I did just for a year until we moved?  Once in awhile, me and Nel would head on over to A&W after school and get some seasoned fries until Jess got out.  We would talk and catch up on the school day.  : )

I wish all the students a very good and memorable year, and I hope they get a fun and creative teacher like Miss Jessi, now Mrs. Jessi.

While Jess will be teaching elementary students this year, Nel will be teaching bright and eager-to-learn freshman college students.

I wish all the teachers a good year too.
They do wonderful things every day.

What a sweet post bringing back sweet memories of the past! I remember wearing those plaid dresses...my mom made a lot of our clothes but she also ordered from the Spiegel catalog...do you remember them?? I absolutely LOVED shopping for school and organizing all of my supplies and clothes to get ready for the first day. Brown paper bags were used for our lunches but there was a time when we got new lunch boxes...I had a Barbie one with a matching thermos! :) Bologna sandwiches wrapped in waxed paper created the most wonderful smell when I opened it up to eat. Let's see, Frito's, an apple and sometimes we even got that extra nickel for ice cream in a cup with one of those little wooden spoons! Thanks for the memories!

Sheri, I pray for our teachers...they are expected to do it all...they have to teach school, manners, social skills...you name it. Not all parents leave it up to the teachers...but more than 60 percent do. My daughters all attended the same grade school I did...but they had a new high school. One of my daughter's still have her Donny Osmond lunch box. LOL. I know you are proud of your beautiful daughters. I like this saying ; 2 teach is , 2 touch a life, 4 ever. Bless America's school children and all their teachers. Love you, xoxo, Susie

Nowadays it's the teachers, like your lovely daughters, that should get encouragement and blessings for the new school year, as teaching has become a hard profession. Students of all ages are more spoilt and less respectful these days, than we used to be.
Anyway, your school reminiscences are heart warming.

What fun to think about those new outfits we wore for the first days of school. Good luck to your daughters and all the teachers as school begins.

We used paper bags, too. And we did not get a new one every day...we folded them and took them home to use over again.

Two teachers...that is cool. My niece started last week teaching at Columbia State Community College for the first time. She looks like a kid so I wonder how funny it looks to have her up there teaching. Schools have started around here too. Seems like summer has moved by fast for them. Elementary school was close to us so we walked but then 7th grade I started riding the bus. Always excited about the start of school but I don't know why....I never liked school.

We have teachers in the family...several, in fact. Unfortunately many parents expect the teachers to "do it all"!! Starting the school year off nowadays is not like it used to be. We were very fortunate to have experienced what and how we lived....:)JP

I think it's so sad that they start the year so early! Remember the days of starting AFTER Labor Day? My son is a teacher in Boston and they do start after Labor Day but here, school starts on Monday! I too was able to walk to and from school alone -- and home for lunch too! I always envied the kids who HAD to bring a lunch and eat at school haha! How wonderful that your daughters are teachers!

I so remember those days. My mother made me two or three new dresses for school and I got new underwear, socks and shoes. We were not allowed to wear pants back then unless it was snow pants on snowy days--even then you wore a skirt over them. lol

Also we did not have a list of school supplies. The school supplied everything you needed and it was handed out the first day of school along with your assigned seat.

I had to ride the bus and it was a one hour ride through the mountains every day-each way. I was the first one on and the last one off....sigh.... I did not like riding the bus.

Hope you have a great weekend and congrats on starting a new school year for your two daughters. xo Diana

Yes, I remember those days, you brought back so many memories. When I went to school we could not wear slacks or jeans. It had to be dresses or skirts and sweaters and saddle shoes or penny loafers. When I lived with my Aunt during Word War 2, she made me pinafores - cotton for school and organza for church.

Now the kids look terrible as they go off to school. My how times have changed.

Have a great weekend, Sheri

Hugs,
Mary

I enjoyed your post today about the past and now the present, with your daughters teaching. I remember my son went to spend the weekend at his friend's house when he was about 7 and was served FROOT LOOPS! He could not get over his good fortune to have sugary colored cereal!!

It is amazing that students are already starting to school. For the first time here in Portland they will start before Labor Day. Labor Day has always been the last fling weekend before school. Good luck to the teachers and the students.

childhood memories are treasure that is priceless .

My school was also at walking distance but we had to walk on hills for 20 minutes and than came the road which lead to school in ten minutes .mother got along everday and even in recess she brought lunch for us so we can eat warm fresh food as we all family members were habitual for this .

returning to school was like celebration and meeting friends and teachers was fun beyond limit.

My kids are back to school since two weeks though it is too hot out there .They like to to have food from school canteen but i prefer to give them lunch along with apple which they eat hopefully .
my youngest one can not hide anything he tells all even he left a bite he will share .
i ask them about their day and this sharing has become a routine .

Best wishes for Nell and Jess as Teachers dear Sheri

Good morning, Sheri!

I too have specific memories of back-to-school. Back in the early 60s, my mother would always sew me a few new outfits, and her favorite (and mine), was plaid. She'd make me a plaid jumper and skirt, I too would get new socks and shoes and a few new handmade skirts and dresses. OH THOSE DAYS ARE GONE!

I go back for meetings the week of August 28, and the air is always full of anxiety for both students and teachers, but I'm ready to tackle another year.

Thank you!

This is such a beautiful post. I love all the memories!
School will start here on Tuesday, but my first day after the summer break was already last Wednesday. All teachers and staff are determined to make this a great school year.
When I was a child, back in Germany I always walked to school. My mom would pack me some dark whole grain bread with cheese and some fruit for lunch. In the morning I usually had oatmeal. We never got new outfits when school started; we got new clothes when the current ones weren't good anymore after they had been mended many times. My mother did also sew a lot of my clothes or altering my sister's old clothes. We didn't have much money since my parents both were refugees and they saved their money for some wonderful family vacations. Sometimes I hated that nifty style, but now I am very grateful for these great life lessons.

Back to school really does bring back good memories for me. I loved school and the newness of it all. I loved buying the Big Chief paper pads and new pencils. And we shopped at Penny's for our clothes too and ordered from Sears. How proud you are of your beautiful young ladies. I have teachers in my family too. Lots to be thankful for! Hugs!

Hi Sheri, What a great post. My grandmother often sewed my school clothes. I did not like loaf bread and mother would often send one of her home-made biscuits for my lunch. We used brown paper bags, too. God bless your daughters in their teaching positions. Hope you are doing well. I am on an extended blog break but will check in often.

Hi Sheri, I just love this post. All the treasured memories just take you back to a sweet time. Many of these moments I can relate to as well. I too carried my lunch in a brown bag with my name on the front. It was a simpler time and I went to a school just right up the street from my house too.
Can't believe how fast this summer has passed and many here are starting back to school the week before Labor Day. Growing up we always went to school after Labor Day.
Wishing your daughters a wonderful school year of teaching.
Have a great week and thank you for stopping by with birthday greetings for my son.
Blessings and joys, xoxo

Such an emotionally loaded post, Sheri! I think this is the first year I haven't posted a back to school post complaining for our school kids here in TN who have to go back the first week in August instead of the date I think they should, the day after Labor Day.

I too wish that children will have great teachers like your daughters. I still fondly remember my favorite teachers.
