Town Story

Whenever I go into town, I always come home with a story or two.  One of the first things I asked my brother when he bought the house is "how far from town is it?"  He was careful in his search to find a place that was not too far out.  I'm only 3 minutes from the town, so I drive there often.  Here's a story from last week that I'll share with you.

~I was at the grocery story in the produce section getting the best looking veggies to bring home, and when I was finished, I headed over to the meats.  I looked back, and from the corner of my eye, I saw something run fast in the distance.  It came from the back storage, and ran past the produce section, and I was glad to be done there.  I thought it might just be a shadow, because another shopper came through.  But I hurried up and gathered all the groceries I needed, and checked out.  Someone was at the check-out with a big bag of dog food.  He said, "did you see the Chipmunk in the store?"  I replied, "that was a Chipmunk?"  He said, "yea, it was so cute."  I said, "not everyone thinks that Chipmunks are cute," and thought to myself, "especially at a grocery store!"  So, I mentioned it to the manager, who's such a good guy, and he searched for it.  He said, "I opened the back door so he can run out."  Apparently, he snuck inside the storage area early in the morning.  V. at check-out said, "well, we live in the woods."  I said, "I know, I love the deer, but not the rodents!"  I got out of there faster than a greased pig! 🐷

I picked up some Chinese take-out, and the restaurant always accommodates me with my orders, as I sometimes change the order to this or that.  The restaurant owners are so good to me.  I asked for chicken chow mein, with more sauce, and it was delicious with fried prawns. 🍤🍤🍤

I thought these flowers were so pretty in the parking lot of the Chinese restaurant.

I also drove through the eatery on another day last week and got a hot pastrami sandwich.  I pulled a neck muscle, and it was painful, and didn't feel like cooking.  They open at 11, but I got there at ten to 11, and they took my order.  I asked them to beef up the sandwiches, and they sure did.  They make a mean hot pastrami sub.  I have this little rock in the console of my car - it's a reminder of all the little daily graces I receive.

The 100-year old pioneer wagon on main street is already decked out with red, white, and blue, and flags waving in every direction.

The California Poppy is blooming like crazy along the edges of the highway, and even in the parking lots.  Their color ranges from shades of golden yellow

to an intense beautiful orange.

Mia did a craft project with her mama.  I thought it turned out so cute.

A California Quail and his mate were digging vigorously in my garden.  They are ground birds that search for food, but there is no food in my garden, so maybe they were making a nest?  Then, the female kept digging while the male looked on.

He looked funny when shaking all the dirt off him.

I love hearing the song of the birds in this area during this season.  It's fun to guess what calls are from what birds.  I will see these little songbirds soon.

Mia finished her last dance class (of three years), and will graduate from her little pink tutu to a purple leotard next fall.

Remember Maxwell House Coffee?  And their jingle?...."Good To The Last Drop."  Maxwell House coffee was introduced in 1892.  Is it just me, or does it blow you away that a coffee has been around for 134 years?  It's still good to the last drop.

I know I share pics of the deer often, but they came around a lot in May this year.  And I was in awe of this Buck right across the street!

Happy June!

That is funny about the chipmunk in the store. Can't say I've ever seen that before. I know there pigeons in the Home Depot - mostly in the garden section but some do manage to get inside. The quail is such a unique bird that I don't get to see in my neighborhood - only once! And it was quite the thrill. I do see them crossing the road in Palo Cedro when I'm there. I need a bumper sticker that reads, I brake for Quail.
Have w wonderful week, Sheri
PS Sorry about your pinched nerve in your neck. That sure hurts. Hope it's on the mend.

I love coming here. It’s pure joy.

It may be your quail was dust bathing. It's something they do. (Google "why do quails dig in the ground" or go to wikipedia for "dust bathing." There are videos. I adore chipmunks and love squirrels too, but they have their place and it isn't in the grocery store! (Although I have seen birds inside stores before.) Your sandwich guy sounds pretty terrific. I hope by now your nerve has released and you're doing better. Sweet grandgirl pix too!

Hello, sweet friend! So much to love here! But not a chipmunk in the grocery store!!! Yikes! I saw a mouse once in the grocery store, and when I told the worker, he acted like it was no big deal! Hope your neck is feeling better. I know seeing those sweet little ones must help!

I love seeing Mia in her ballet outfit and she soon will be in purple.
I love the two sisters playing at the park, they are so cute.

I love chipmunks, they are so cute! But not in grocery stores! You got wonderful Quail photos. I did not know the poppies start out yellow!!! I don't know which color is the prettiest.

She drink Maxwell House and I do remember that commercial very well! Sweet girls! Congrats on moving up to the purple leo- I bet she is excited. Have a great week- and oh, almost forgot- those flowers are eye popping gorgeous. I love bright yellow.

What a cute story of the chipmonk in the market. Your food choices sound delicious. Your granddaughters are growing up so fast. Love when young girls enjoy taking ballet. My daughter took too. I took at the same time she did too. And then I love, love California poppies and Quail. How fun for you to have the quail visiting your yard, along with the deer and birds.

I think that was funny about the chipmunk. You don't like little rodents like that - I love to look at them OUTSIDE!
You are closer to town than I realized.
It is becoming home to you there and people know you opening the store earlier and making big pastrami sandwiches! That sounds so delicious.
The photos of those flowers are so pretty - you can see each and every pedal.
The female quail is working, and the male is looking on - kind of the way it is - isn't it?
I don't think I have had Maxwell Coffee - but I sure do remember the commercial.
Enjoyed the pioneer wagon with the flags.
The poppies come out yellow and change to orange?
And the girls - all three are so incredibly beautiful.
I love your posts - it looks like you spend a lot of time on them. sandie

So much to enjoy in this post, Sheri!
Mia looks adorable in her ballet outfit, and how exciting that she’ll be moving into purple soon.
The sisters at the park are just the sweetest.
Your chipmunk story gave me a chuckle-- I’d have hurried along too!
And those flowers you captured are simply beautiful, such a bright splash of color. 🌹

Oh the chipmunk made me smile...we have them running everywhere. If you sit still on the deck they can be quite entertaining. Bet their cuteness is what inspired "Alvin and the Chipmunks". Mine come into the garage and help themselves to bird seed. Your pictures of the quail and deer are wonderful. Bet you are looking forward to having a lovely visit with your granddaughters. They are so lovely dear friend. Take care and enjoy this beautiful month of June. Hugs!

You certainly experience a lot! The incident at the grocery store—I can imagine you found it unpleasant. :)

The turquoise Grace heart is beautiful. It suits you so well.

Mia will be a fantastic dancer you can see she loves dancing.

I wish you a wonderful June!

Coming to your blog is always so delightful. You make the everyday things so interesting and fun to read about.
I wish our poppies were still blooming. They were so early this year so I didn't get any photos. Love the variety of color.
Now I'm hungry for GOOD Chinese food. It really is hard to find.
And yumm on the sandwich with extra meat ...yummm. Small town atmosphere is so gratifying.
Enjoy the rest of your week with the Grands.

Summer has certainly arrived Sheri, and I love all your photos. I wonder what the Quails were up to? Maybe you will have little quails running about soon. Isn't the pioneer wagon beautiful; lovely ironwork and so well preserved. I like to see pieces of history preserved this way. I have a plant with a yellow flower very like this one, and I don't know the name of it. My sister gave me a piece and I have kept it growing. You can't buy it in the shops these days. Oh dear, the chipmonk in the store. They are cheeky little guys.

Oh my! The chipmunk must have been a surprise in the store. I truly love them but I can understand not be excited when you see one in a grocery store. I have had a bird fly by me one time in the grocery store. LOL! Scared me to death.

I love the poppies! Wow! How beautiful!!!!!

Hi Sheri! I loved the energy in this post. Funny that the little chipmunk hunts for food there. Smart little dude for sure. Are those little figgy bars? Neato. I do recall the song. I heard someone talking about this the other day that adverts today don't have that same jingle to them. That today they don't have that same feeling of fun, make people laugh or have a song to remember. I thought that was interesting. I don't see ads today so I don't know if that's true or not but I also can't tell you any new songs being coffee and Bumble Bee tuna tunes.

LOOOVE the yellow golden flowers and that it sounds like a first generation eatery. I have one near me first gen. Very clean food BUT ... prices just went too high and now it's a bridge to far. Not only went higher, smaller amount too.

Hope you have a groovy rest of your day!

That’s great that you only live a short distance from town. How about that little chipmunk? The manager has a good heart. The chicken chow mein with fried prawns sounds delicious, as did your pastrami sandwich! I agree, those flowers were very pretty and I have always enjoyed the California poppy. I saw a lot of them on my trip out west, though only remember the orange ones, and I do remember the quail, a cute bird! Sorry to hear about your pulled neck muscle, feel better soon. The rock you keep in your car, a lovely word. The pioneer wagon was a beautiful sight. Mia’s craft project turned out beautifully and how neat to see all those positive reminders. Your little songbirds are the cutest, their smiles are warming and those tutus are charming. A coffee and Fig Newtons, perfect combination. It is amazing that the company has been around for all those years. Thank you for all your super photos and narrative. I miss seeing the deer, they seem to scarce lately around here. I don’t want to see them near our busy roads but even when we go out into the countryside, we often come back without seeing any. Maybe next time we go for a ride, fingers crossed! A happy June to you also.

I always love catching up with you Sheri, you share life stories in such a fun way! The chipmunk in the store was a funny one! So nice that the local owners are so accomodating to you. Your granddarlings are so precious! We have California quail here too, they are so amazing to watch, so family oriented. The dad is very involved in caring for the family. Wishing you lots of wonderful blessings in June!

Hello Dear Sheri....I love your sharing your excursions to town. All sounds good. Of course, I wouldn't like little chippy chipmunk traipsing in the supermarket, either. Your yellow flower photos are just beautiful. So happy you are going to see your grands soon, too. Hope you have a blessed and happy rest of the weekend! Suan

Hi Sheri,
We are finally out of school as of Thursday! Its been a very busy week. I am anxious to have time to play outside. When I was a kid I had two pet chipmunks. They are cute, but in a grocery store not so much. I am glad Mia is graduating to her next level. That sounds like fun. I have been drinking Dunkin Donuts coffee, but I have had Maxwell House too. That is a long time to be in business. I use to only drink Folgers. I hope you are enjoying your weekend!
