It's February, and one of our coldest months here! V. at the grocery store told me it was 17 degrees one morning. Every time I want to go out and have a little adventure, the cold air has kept me inside. This is my car one cold morning.
I seem to cook and bake a lot when we have these frigid temperatures. Here's a meatloaf I cooked for dinner one night. You know, I've been cooking for 46 years - that's a long time, so I don't do strict recipe following, I go by looks and feel. If I'm baking and it requires precise measuring, then I'll follow the recipe, but most of the time, I just wing it. So, you will never see a long written recipe on here, but I will tell you the ingredients I put in....ground beef, a little ketchup, onions, garlic salt, pepper, one egg, and bake at 350. (I cook mine for about 50 minutes, but it depends on how much meatloaf you make).
Lumber was delivered to my house, and they are starting to build a new fence in the back yard. Part of the old one crashed and fell when we had a great wind this last Fall. A portion of the newer fencing is intact, so it will look nice when it's finished. I will miss the deer roaming in my back yard that sometimes come through the large opening from the woods.
Despite the cold, I managed to get out and drive to the little pink eatery on the main street of my town. My son treated me to a hot pastrami sandwich, crisscut fries, and a coke. They have the best pastrami subs ever.
We are in the heart of winter here, and not many birds are coming around yet. Everything is bare, but these woods around me are still beautiful and haunting, as I think about all the ancestors who came before and lived in this area.
I got a surprise in the mail from my blog friend, Susan. It was a Valentine card with the cutest Snowbaby. I saw it on one of her posts, and mentioned how much I loved it, and she thought it belonged with me. It was wrapped nicely and tight so there was no breakage, and it was such a thoughtful gift.
You are probably familiar with the Snowbabies, but if not, here's a little about them.
*Snowbabies are porcelain figurines that were popular in the mid-80's (when my girls were growing up). They originated in Germany in the late 1890's. They are cherub-like children in snowsuits that appear to have flakes of snow over them. My sister used to collect the Snowbabies, and I'll have to ask her if she still has any.
I have been gathering little things for the kids' goody bags, and having a fun time with that.
I made a batch of brownies to warm the house one cold afternoon.
Every year, I send out the Valentine cards to my adult kids, and now I send them out to the grandkids. I have so much fun doing this. I used to love giving and receiving them when we were in school, and I have kept the tradition alive.
Mia making pizza with daddy. Renecke makes the best homemade pizza. πππ
Francesca and Mia are into Squishmallows right now. These are popular ultra-soft plush toys known for their marshmallow-like and huggable designs. When I saw this cereal at the grocery store, I had to pick it up.
Many of you are anxious for spring to arrive, but we have long winters here, and sometimes we can get snow until April. So I will try to enjoy the cold and the snow and the rain for a little while longer.

Baking without a recipe is a good skill to have. Baking brownies to warm the house! Meatloaf, adding shredded carrot adds a nice texture.
The pastrami sandwich brings back memories of NYC.

Sheri, Good morning.
There was one time when it snowed up at Manzanita lake in June! We were camping. Mostly a flurry but still. Another time, at Kings Canyon, it snowed while we were camping. You just never know in the mountains! It is amazing you've been so cold, and down here I've had my windows open. Very mild.
I usually don't follow cooking recipes to a T, but with baking since it is a form of chemistry, I do.
I enjoy a good meatloaf -
Nice post and I hope you thougoloy enjoy this first week of February.
Morning from Texas. Susan is so sweet and she always has such cute little things in her home. The snowbaby is precious and girl, I know you already have the perfect spot for it. I find it interesting how the United States has so many different seasons going on all around us. It can be almost spring here, but yet winter where you are. I am like you...I do not follow recipes, especially on the foods that I was raised eating. My mom didn't either. I watched her and now, I just know what goes into my meatloaf or casserole. My kids would have that pan of brownies devoured in no time. I rarely make them..and I think it's because I myself am not a chocolate person. I need to do better. Yay for you getting a new fence!! The deer are going to wonder what happened to their trail getting to your backyard. Valentines...some of my favorite memories are the valentine boxes we made at school and how everyone wanted their box to be full. Those were some good days. I've started picking up a few things for the kids and for the little ones, I usually mail them a card with money for them to go shopping. Now days, it cost so much to send packages to Colorado and to West Texas. I'd rather them have the money that I spent on shipping for them to use. Wishing you a fabulous week Sheri.. Keep warm and keep cooking those delicious meals. ((Hugs))
Seems like I have bought a zillion Squishmallows for our granddaughters! And I got that cereal! It is actually pretty good. Those gift bags are so cute, and I love how you out the potatoes and carrots right beside the meatloaf. It looks so good!
Dear Sheri, your meatloaf dinner looks scrumptious πAll your photos and illustrations are beautiful.
Ummm, yummm, Your dinner looks so good. I haven't made meatloaf in ages. I think its about time and I like the addition of the potatoes and carrots.
When I was young I would get so frustrated wit my Mom. I would try to learn some of the things she made. When I would ask how much to put in something or how do I know when its mixed enough or done. She would say when it looks or feels right. NOW I understand but then it was annoying.
Love the little Snowbabies. They are real treasures.
I agree that Valentines are so much fun to give and receive. I have to get busy and get a few for sending and giving.
Mighty cold in your mountains. I'm so glad to have the temperatures going up to 65F today. Its a regular heat wave !!
We do need the rain and snow in the mountains though.
Have a terrific week.
Sue
Hi Sheri,
I love that you continue to give your adult kids Valentine's. I love the goodies you are finding for your granddaughters.
I am with you, we have many weeks until spring, so enjoy winter while it is here. It is my time to rest, summer is so busy in the garden.
I love meatloaf, I make it like you do.
And I like to warm the house by baking and cooking too. We are two peas in a pod!
Happy February my dear friend!
Good afternoon, Sherri,
I fell in love with that last meme of the girl trying to catch the snowflakes with her tongue. Making a tough situation a positive one!
Your car window glass looked so cold!
AI agree home is where the good stuff is. I wish we all felt that way.
I guess the fence is a double edge sword there - good and bad.
That was so nice of your friend sending you a snow baby - it was cute.
I love those goody bags for the girls. So pretty.
I have never seen Squishmallows before - they are always thinking of something.
I love this month.
Love, sandie
The kids will love those goodie bags. I'm not a big recipe follower as well.
Oh Sheri. That was such a darling post! Yes, you will miss the deer but you'll have a lovely new fence! Ohhhh, Squishmallows are the pizazz here, too. I wouldn't even begin to count how many there are at my grandkids' house. The pastrami sub sounds yummy. You were so cute to put a photo of the tiny Snow baby on your post. Cute cute cut! I hope you have a totally wonderful week ahead, despite the cold temps. Here, it feels like jumping into a deep freezer when you go out. C-c-c-c-old. 13 degrees when I was driving the other day. YIKES. Oh Sheri. It would be dangerous for me to make a tray of brownies like that. I know I'd be cutting into them frequently. Hugs, Susan
Love your meatloaf recipe, and I wrote it down. I cook that way too, we have an instinct for quantity. It sounds like your Winter is as long as my daughter has in Ottawa, and the snow will be around for quite some time yet. The woods do look hauntingly beautiful, and make me wish I could fly over there to enjoy them. I never heard of the snowbabies, but she is very pretty and a beautiful gift. That is a gorgeous photo of Mia and her Dad - kids are the best. Stay warm dear Sheri.
After so many years of cooking, I believe you immediately that you have a good feel for it and are very good at it. The brownies look absolutely delicious.
The photo of the two pizza bakers is great.
Believe it or not, I've never heard of snow babies before. :) I think the one you received as a gift is adorable.
I wish you a wonderful February.
I'm like you with cooking and baking in the winter. And yes, I remember snow babies -- this one is a cutie! I don't think anyone can build a fence here in January, the ground is so deeply frozen, they'd never be able to put it in! Here's to a terrific week. Your munchkins are going to love their Valentine goodies!
You know how I love my snail mail. Your munchkins will love their goodies. Your posts always just evoke warmth. Thank you so much. Love you.
I liked the thought in your second picture about the good stuff inside. Oh my your meatloaf and brownies looked so good. The pastrami sandwich sounded delicious too. I have been sick the past week and today food is beginning to sound good again. I haven't even begun to think about Valentine's yet. Thanks for inspiring me to at least think of them.
Hi dear Sheri! Thank you for this sweet post. It is Summer in my country and it is hot too much. Sorry for my English. I do love to stay home, cooking, gardening and painting my porcelains. I have just retired... Blessings.
Hi Sheri,
Geez I never thought about how long I have been cooking and baking. Can I count my Suzie Homemaker oven? If so that would be 60 years of baking yummy treats. π€£ I really started cooking and baking when I was a young girl. I loved it. My granddaughter is the same. She is very good at making things. I am glad you are staying warm. I am too. It has been warm during the day , but cold at night. Enjoy your week!
Meatloaf and brownies sound perfect for winter days. The Snowbaby gift is so thoughtful, and I love how you keep Valentine traditions alive for your kids and grandkids. Even with the cold, your little adventures and family moments bring so much warmth. ❤️
Have a wonderful weekend, Sheri πΉ
I can almost feel the frigid weather that you are having. I would want to stay in too. What a sweet thoughtful gift you received from Susan. I made meatloaf this week too- although mine was vegan made with lentils. It was good. I think cold weather calls for baking to warm up the house with the heat and nice aromas. Enjoy your new fence.
How nice to send that snowbaby.
I send a card to my one grand.
Daughter.
Our winter is very long and we can get snow in April nut fingers crossed NO,
Cathy
OMG, I cannot believe it was actually 17 degrees where you are, because that is literally freezing; however, your meatloaf looks so yummy! Do you have a secret ingredient for your brownies too? I hope you have the best weekend ever staying warm with those cute snowbabies. Plus, I just shared a new travel post that you are invited to read at www.melodyjacob.com.
Happy Sunday love.
First up, love everything about that cartoon. All of it.
Cooking with soul. I am all for that. Same.
Snowbaby is super duper thoughtful.
Love the home bakers shot! So cute. Though I thought I read and commented on this post before. If I did and you just didn’t get to publish the comment, sorry about the double comment. I’ve been away and just catching up on everyone’s stuff.
Cheers, Ivy.
