Well, school is starting for some, and it seems that it's getting earlier every year. I so wish the kids started school when we did, in September, so they don't have to endure those hot days that are still so apparent in summer. Every school year I can't help but look back at my own childhood, remembering the fun moments, and especially those students who stood out from all the others.
*There was Shannon. Her name, in itself, was cool. She had such a cute smile, walk, and personality. She lived across town where we attended junior high, and it would be a very different scene that year from the local school we were used to. All the boys liked her, and all the girls wanted to be like her. She just had a way with people.
*Then there was John B. He excelled in every sport he played, and he played many. Our senior year, he got Most Athletic, an honor that was well deserved.
All the girls liked him, even the girls from our rival school across town. He was just a good guy. I seem to remember his girlfriend too; she was pretty nice. ; )
*There was Tina. She was a pretty thing who could get any guy she wanted. We had the same taste in boys, and we actually had some of the same boy crushes throughout the years. She was my best friend until high school. She had twin sisters, so the closets in their bedrooms were filled to the brim with clothes. Between her and her sisters' clothes, I borrowed a thing or two, and she was always generous.
*Then there was Jackie. Just her face expressions alone were hilarious. We were good friends for a time, and spent many hours at each other's houses. She had step sisters, which was foreign to me at the time, and a brother who was pretty cute. He was so shy though that I could barely get a "hi" out of him.
*There was also Morfoula. Her name just says it all, doesn't it? She was Greek (like "my big fat Greek wedding" Greek). She was attractive with long brown hair and brown eyes. When we had sleep overs at her house, her family would tease me and never hesitate to remind me that I was only part Greek, and that their family was all. She married a Greek man (what a surprise), and I ran into her from time to time, as she lived in a big house in my hometown close to where we lived. I also saw her regularly at the Greek festival every Spring.
These are all people I grew up with that had charisma, and often times, it's these type of students who put an unexpected zest in the school year.
Francesca started her first week of school, and I hope my little ones have an exceptional year; maybe they will have some of those charismatic students in their lives as well. Or perhaps they will be fortunate enough to be them.
And Mrs. Jessi has already started teaching her elementary class.
Mia hasn't started yet, but this was a happy little camper when Nel took her shopping for school clothes at Target.
Nel has a little bit more of a summer break before teaching her college students.
Oh, school days....be kind to the students and teachers. They make such an effort all year long.
Do you remember any unusually delightful students when you were in school? I'd love to hear about it.

School starts Wednesday August 13 here. Teachers have been back getting their rooms together. Too hot to go back. 110 here yesterday.
I had some colorful friends back in school I still think about. So many have passed away and they used to be so vibrant.
I remember fondly going back to school shopping for clothes on Market St in San Francisco before the malls. It was always so much fun being down there with all the hustle/bustle of a big city.
Enjoy the week - stay cool.
Hi Sheri,
I enjoyed shopping for new school supplies, a new trapper keeper, pencils, pens, markers, glue, oh so much fun picking out folders and notebooks.
:-)
Happy New School Year!
Carla
This is just the sweetest
The photos are wonderful! You had a lot of friends and were popular! High School is such ancient history for me, but I still have vivid memories of so much of it.
En españa, ahora los niños están de cacaciones y las clases comenzarán ya iniciado el mes de septiembre.
Saludos.
I remember play clothes and not play clothes and I still do that to this day. I stil have play clothes and they're covered in chalk paint as they should be. Happy New School Year!
What a lovely trip down memory lane Sheri! I still can't believe I graduated high in 2004! 21 years ago lol
A memory lane post....I enjoyed the photos you shared of your classmates. It's so nice to go back and look at the year books and just reminisce about those good days. We are starting to plan our 55 class reunion. Gosh, hard to believe. The pictures of the girls and and your Jess and Nell are so good. I pray they have a good, safe year. One of my very good friends (she has now passed) had a closet full of clothes. Her mom was a seamstress and it was nothing for her to have a new dress every week. Especially when those tent style dresses came along. The students in our area start school on Wednesday. Like you Sheri, I wish school did not start until after Labor day. hugs for a new week..
Thank you for all these wonderful memories, and the photos and the people you knew. I loved them! How exciting that Francesca started her first week at school. Adorable photos of all your sweeties. School will be starting up again here soon. Thoroughly enjoyed Sheri, thank you so much for sharing.
I was a runner and loved going to football and basketball games. My heros wore team uniforms for our high school. I had a major crush on one guy who was an outstanding athlete. Or as they say now days the G.O.A.T. Of course he had girls waiting in line to date him. I also had an older brother who was friends with him. So of course that didnt work out well. 🤣 I had a few friends but none I know now. My Senior year I had one class and then left and went to work.
Girl I have to be honest - I don't think I would be able to remember someone from high school. Maybe one or two, but no real memory.
Not only do you remember them, you have photos of them.
I do believe me miss our childhood at times.
Your Greek situation reminds me of My Fat Greek Wedding. Have you seen it?
This is week 3 of school here.
Francesca looked ready with Charolette there to help. So cute.
Mia getting ready herself.
Everyone does have their own story for sure.
I enjoyed travelling down memory lane with you and thinking of my own first-day-of-school memories. Seems so long ago now (because it is) and I don't remember it being hot. SO hot now.

Sheri so enjoyed seeing your friends from school. I especially smiled over the clothing we wore back then. I remember my freshmen year every girl had to wear a dress...pants were forbidden. By the time my senior year arrived, pant suits were in style as well as jeans. What a change from today! Your granddaughters look so cute and your daughters so beautiful. Thank you for sharing these pictures from the past. I loved the quote about going home...so true! Would it not be fun to just revisit our growing up years once again. Have a great day friend. Hugs!
Adorable remembrances! Thank you for sharing!
Loved this post..I don't think I have any
pictures of high school friends..That was a very long time ago ...They are still present in my mind...Seems early for school to start..
What fun for you to reminisce. I had three girlfriends that I loved. I said I would always keep contact with them. One has passed, one has moved to Texas, and one I did see in the spring. A couple years ago I went to my high school reunion and there were two girls I connected to after all these years. I had wished we had been friends in high school. Life is interesting that way. Now here where I live, my grandson will start to school right after Labor Day.
Such an exciting time of year for kids! I remember being so excited to get new school clothes and supplies and see all my school friends again, and maybe meet some new ones. I met my future husband in 9th grade, so we hung out with mutual friends and had so much fun. Also had sweet girlfriends that I loved and admired. School days go by so fast and if you are lucky, you make life-long friends, or marry one!
Your sweet girls all look so adorable getting ready for the new school year. Your daughters are beautiful and I love that they are educators. That takes dedication, patience, empathy and intelligence. So appreciate the teachers of the world. xx K
Your post today was so exciting to read. Your words conjured images in my head. I could practically see them all. Not just the ones in the photos.
My favorite memory is of my best friend. She was so open and curious, and also very pretty. She had dark brown natural curls. And a sweet older brother. :)
What a wonderful memory walk! And now, your girls will be having the same. FB brought a couple of grade school friends back into my orbit but my best memories are of high school and all the kids in theatre and music! We had wonderful times -- it was a great period to be a teen!
You had so many special friends that hold a special place in your heart!!! School always starts in August here. I remember going to enrollment and how excited I was for school to start and picking out my outfit for the first day! Your grand daughters are sooooo cute!!!

This is such a great post. I do remember that there were kids with charisma and even some that were not that attractive but their personalities shined and they were very popular. I had a group of a few girl friends but we were not the real popular crowd- but we had fun. It's wonderful that you still have pics of your high school friends. I should go back to my year book and look at everyone. We had 1100 in just my graduating class.
I loved hearing your memories from school days gone by. Indeed, there were many who had charm and charisma, and never forgotten personalities! Praying your grandbabies have a wonderful school year too! It is hard to believe it is time for the kids to go back to school!
Oh Sheri, that was a trip down memory lane for you! How wonderful you remember those dear people. Great photos! The grands are totally adorable. They are growing up so fast, Sheri! Thanks for all your visits and comments on Writing Straight from the Heart. I appreciate them so much. Hugs and wishes for a wonderful new week for you! Susan
Yes, we always went back to school in September - who changed that anyway?
