Big Plaid Shirt

School has started in most areas, and it wasn't a long enough Summer for teachers like Jess and Nel, who had to go back to work last week.

I remember one school year when I wanted to get a short hair cut.  I was 8 years old, and my mom was the one who cut my hair for the first day of school.  I kept telling her, "shorter, shorter."

I don't know why I wanted my hair short that year, maybe a phase I went through, but it grew out, and I have had long hair ever since.

I always loved plaid clothes, especially the first week of school.  It reminded me of Autumn....and still does.  In the book I've been reading, Crow Call, Lizzy wears a BIG plaid shirt when she goes hunting with her dad.

My father hands back both menus to the waitress.  "Three pieces of cherry pie," he tells her.  "Three?"  She looks at him sleepily, not writing the order down.  "You mean two?"  "No," he said, "I mean three.  One for me, with black coffee, and two for my hunting companion, with a large glass of milk." ~Crow Call

I remember going hunting with my dad, and I have been thinking about that because hunting season starts soon.  I wasn't afraid, like Lizzy was in the book.  I just went along with my dad, and had the confidence that he would protect me.  I ran ahead to see what the hunters caught, gathered them, and headed back through the woods in my dad's footsteps.

I do hope Jess has a good school year with those small precious kids who put their trust in her hands.  We always remember that one special teacher from grade school, don't we?

You know how much I love plaid, but I never told you why....it reminds me of my dad.

My sister gave me the book, Crow Call, and before even reading it, I met her at a diner and ordered a cup of coffee and a piece of cherry pie.  We both did.  ; )

Sherry, You know I love that picture of you and your dad. How wonderful to have photos from your kid years I have no pictures with my dad, but so glad I have some of my step dad, who treated us all so well. I have had short hair thru the years here and there. It in a pulled back style now that I am old, but I am thinking of a shorter style with a body perm....too much worry about hair for me. Your mom did a good job cutting your hair. :) Blessings to you and yours, xoxo, Susie
p.s. It was too short a summer for our teacher girls.

Sheri what a wonderful post. The photo with your dad is so heartwarming. Your thoughts on plaid reminded me of a red and black plaid dress I had when I started back to school. Thank you for not only sharing your memories but reminding me of some of my own. Do hope your loved ones have a blessed school year. P.S. You were so cute with your hair short! Have a great week. Hugs!

I love this walk back in time and that photo of you and your dad is such a treasure. What wonderful illustrations.

I am NOT ready for summer to end, though. It has been too short here, but it seems to be making a bit of a swing into fall.

I had a pixie cut in 3rd grade!! My Mom found the haircut in the newspaper and talked me into cutting my long hair to almost nothing.
Great picture of you and your Dad. My Dad always wore plaid button up shirts also. Every time I see an older man wearing one I think of him.

Hello!
Gosh your hair was short - good thing you were so cute - it really looked good on you.
I am in the process of letting my hair grow a little longer but it is not that long and driving me nuts.
Your sister knew that you would like that book.
It was nice seeing you with your father there.
I like plaid on others - myself not so much.
Good luck to the girls teaching!
Love, sandie

I love gingham to this day. I remember having plaid dresses starting to school.
Good fortune to your daughters on this school year.
Blessings on you and your family!

Oh Sheri, I associate back to school with plaid too. My mother ALWAYS sewed me at least one outfit made of plaid for that special first day. I started school yesterday and it was a lovely day.

Hello Sheri....
Gosh, you had some lovely memories in today's post. That looks like a great little book you are reading. School is starting here, too, and it's quite exciting. For the littlest ones, it must be quite scary, too. Great post, Sheri. Loved it.

Hey Sheri~ plaid, no always been a fan of it but have been looking for a long sleeve plaid shirt to go with my overalls. I am looking for a purple on though! Isn't it funny how as we age our taste changes. Nice memories on you and your dad. You actually went hunting with him? I never even went hunting with my ex hubby. Now at this age, killing something does not sit well with me. However I have a niece that has been hunting since her late teens. Nope, her dad did not take her cause even though our dad was a hunter, my brothers never have gone. Paige's boyfriend at the time, hubby now, took her out and taught her, she field dresses and does it all. I love it that it can be a womans sport also, just not mine!!! haha. What a cute pic of you!! Me, my very first short cut came when I was about 5 and I let a neighbor kid cut my hair. I guess at that age i thought that was a great idea!! haha, NOPE it was not. Mom had to take me out and get it shaped up after that. That started the short hair crave. I have always gone from short to letting it grow for a couple of yrs then turning around and cutting it off. Wearing it short for a bit and then letting it grow again. Recently in the last three months I have cut it off again. I realized that the longer mine was getting the thinner it got and the older I looked. SHORT IT IS!....at least till I forget I look older with longer hair and grow it out again!
