Shish Kebobs and Greek Pastry

I went to the Greek Festival over the weekend, and I always have a great time when I'm there.  I ran into my friend, who is Greek, and talked a bit.   She was one of my best friends growing up, and she helps run the festival every year.  The tables were set up with blue and white checkered table cloths, and the food was amazing, as usual.  When we first got there, they were preparing the meat for the hungry visitors.  Along with the many dishes they served, my son enjoyed a shish kebob and a spinach and feta pastry.    The view from the festival was very pretty overlooking an array of trees.  We usually step inside the church, which is so beautiful.  I have always loved religious Greek art.  There was one particular gold hanging lantern that I admired.  We brought home some dessert, and I was drooling over the powdered sugar cookies even more than the Baklava this year.   What a fun day we had, and this festival is a must  to attend every year.   As I walked around listening to the Greek music and seeing the lively faces and atmosphere, I felt so connected with these people.......my heritage.

In the 6th & 7th pictures we see Saint Anna (ΑΓΙΑ ΑΝΝΑ) holding in her arms her daughter, Virgin Mary.
If you can see, in the right side there 4 letters
MΡ ΘΥ
which are the initial of two words
MΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ (Mother of God).

Interesting facts of the day ;)

I love Greek food and their churches too. About a week ago I posted about our local Greek food fest. Yum. The church has an even bigger festival in September.

Some festivals are done better than others. This one seemed to be on point. The food looks amazing, and the sugar cookies! I'm right with you on those Sheri! I can imagine eating those and walking around with powdered sugar all over my face and clothes lol.

That looked like a wonderful festival, Sheri. Just great. You mentioned what your son ate. Did YOU have lunch, too? (I love details, especially when it comes to food. hahaha)

Love the Greek culture. There is a large Greek community here in western Massachusetts, too.

Take care and have a good rest of the week! Hugs. Susan

I know what you mean my friend.....connecting is the key. Whether you are at a festival, celebrating your heritage or talking to your neighbors (what I did this weekend, and had such fun), connecting is such a human need. And to connect over FOOD is even more fun. We were meant to communicate, to be in community, to share what we have in COMMON. See the word connections here? It's all so marvelous.

Oh what a delightful festival!
I love festivals, they are always delightful, the energy, the scents, the sights and fellowship are so rewarding.
We had a fabulous weekend too, with several Birthday celebrations of sweet little grandchildren.
Good food, great conversations and lots of mini hugs, kisses and smiles!
Life is a wonderful blessing!
Love to You,
Jemma

Thanks for the lovely bits of beautiful heritage. We happened upon a Greek Fest one time while we were at the Monterey Bay Wharf. We sat on the grass with our lunches and ate to lively music and dancing. Then we took a very long walk to the Aquarium. Your post brought up a great memory that I had forgotten about till now.

I like shish kebabs too, we make them at home, hubby is of Mediterranean descent. The festival sounds wonderful, it's where you learn their culture and meet new friends. Nice post Sheri. Btw, I have now a Google Friend Connect button (the proper one :)) in my blog, thanks for pinpointing it to me earlier. I hope you can follow :) Ciao!

It looks like a wonderful festival! I think baklava is my favorite Greek food. I am going to write down the Euripides quote, it's a good one. :) Enjoy your day!
