Faceless Dolls

When Nel visited the Dominican Republic, she saw this sweet ceramic doll while browsing through the market place in Santiago.  These faceless women are made by local artists and are very popular there.

Their tour guide told them that they are made without faces so that they represent any woman, and they are used to celebrate all women.  They are ceramic and painted, and have different bouquets and hats.  Nel bought a green one for herself, a red one for Jess, and a yellow one for me.  She said out of all the ones she looked at (about 50), this was the only one that had a red rose.  So, she brought it home for me.

I love it when my girls bring me home goodies from all the different places they visit around the world.  This doll reminds me of the many women in blog land that I meet, whose faces often don't show up on the screen, but whose goodness linger in my heart every day.

Thank you for share, Sherry! I was interested to read about.... and why these dolls are faceless.
I love to buy gifts for loved ones when traveling. And I like to get from my children. Somehow this gesture warms me, I know that my children are thinking about me in that moment, when choosing a gift to please me and smiling.
You did such a wonderful comparison! Actually, you're a wonderful and kind person!

Sheri,
A very sweet doll. I like the idea that the face represents all faces of woman. Now the Amish in Lancaster PA do not only stop you from photographing them, their dolls are faceless because of their belief it can allow the images soul to be taken.
One of the best things about travel to me is learning different customs and traditions. Your post taught me something I didn't know before. I thank you for this interesting post.

How lovely. I really like that she doesn't have a face. She could represent anyone. I hope you have a lovely week.

How thoughtful to bring back a doll with a red rose for you and what a lovely story behind these faceless dolls which I haven't heard of before. Well chosen souvenirs are so special and I often like to bring back something which reminds me of my time visiting a particular country.

You have the biggest heart, a wealth of poetry and an open canvas upon which you always inspire my friend. You are so right about the faceless doll here. She can represent any woman. The eyes are left out to give room for the different perspectives with which each woman sees the world. The mouth is left out to leave it room for each woman's distinct voice. How brilliant is this.....

But one of the best things about this post is your muse on it. A small profile photo is never enough to give us more information about the bloggers we meet, but the consistent and kind actions of each woman does "linger" in our hearts, every day. I know it.

You are such a blessing. We must speak again very soon, OK?

Hugs to you dearest Sheri, Anita

Such an endearing story behind that lovely doll.
Our children's gifts are such treasures we will cherish forever,
and though they might not know how we feel every time we receive anything from them, we treasure these little things because of their thoughtfulness and love that accompanied these gifts.

Have a wonderful day ♥

Dear Sheri,
I thought you would enjoy them... I love your roses also... Different shade of pink, but beautiful!
I know we should be on water restriction, we need water so desperately, but I wish I could give my roses what they need. Oh this heat! Did you get a thunder storm yesterday? The wind came up, blew my chairs on the porch all the way across.. The sky turned black and down it came... Unfortunately, only for about 10 minutes...
Stay out of the heat, dear friend
fondly,
Penny

Hi Sheri....Sweet little doll. We had a notice at church about not leaving purses in the pews during Communion. Sad but true. That's the times we live in. God knows all about it, I'm sure. Sheri, thanks for all your sweet visits. Love them. Susan

You have such a good heart Sheri, it's not at all surprising you've raised such thoughtful daughters. This doll is indeed the perfect gift, not just because she has a red rose, but because of the sentiment you've so eloquently and kindly attached to it. I, along with many others, share that sentiment about YOU.
