Fall Fog

I had to go to DMV a couple weeks ago to take care of car stuff, and there is a DMV down the mountain, but also one up the mountain that is closer, so I decided to go to that one.  It was a nice chilly morning, and while driving up the highway, I saw fog in the distance surrounding the mountains ahead of me.  I thought to myself, "oh no, I hope I don't get trapped in that fog."  Sure enough, I was right in the thick of it all, and at one point, I could barely see in front of me.  Now, I've always loved foggy mornings, but driving up a twisty mountain road engulfed in it is something else.  Well, I made it to town, whispering prayers the whole way, and took care of my business at the DMV.  It took some time, as they needed not only one document, but five, but M. was so helpful, and carried me through the process.  When I got in my car, I was so relieved, so I drove over to this little coffee shop that I go to sometime and ordered a pumpkin spice latte and a bagel with cream cheese.  Then, I headed over to the lake to find peace and calm, to just sit and enjoy my coffee.

This lavender was in a store parking lot, and it was growing so wildly and pretty.

I went over to the nursery to see if there were any flowers still blooming, and they have a quaint store at the nursery that I always visit as well.  There was a couple red roses there just waiting for me.

Loved this little barn birdhouse.

The purple pansies were flawless.

I found another little coffee shop that I will visit next time.  This one is so charming with an outdoor area and picnic tables.

I wanted to visit the museum, but it wasn't open for another hour or so, and I didn't want to wait, but I did see the little schoolhouse.  This schoolhouse was originally built in 1884 in a nearby town, and it was moved to its location at the museum when it was 100 years old.  It is one of the historic exhibits there now.

Foggy days have always brought a sense of calm to me, and I feel a very strong connection with nature when fog is present, but driving up a twisty mountain highway with fog in the midst can feel mysterious and a little eerie.

Here are a few October pics this week.  There is a tree in my neighborhood that has turned color, and it almost looks like a painting, it's that pretty.  I made some pumpkin cookies with cream cheese frosting.  The deer have been hanging out in my yard; I am wondering if they are drawn to the orange pumpkins on my porch.  Nel made an apple pie, and oh, her apple pies always look incredible.

I have been watching Lea at Little House on the Mountain.  There is so much hype in the world today, and she slows things down a bit.  She talks about ways to make a house cozy and comfortable, homemade teas and soups, her dogs and chickens, creative decorating ideas, and so much more.  She has a calming voice, and I have enjoyed watching her autumn and winter videos.  Lovely woman.  This is a quote she shared on one of her videos that I loved.

"I believe that a Godly home is a foretaste of heaven.  Our homes, imperfect as they are, must be a haven from the chaos outside.  They should be a reflection of our eternal home, where troubled souls find peace, weary hearts find rest, hungry bodies find refreshment, lonely pilgrims find communion, and wounded spirits find compassion."

~Jani Ortlund

I got a landscaper out here to do some sprucing up before the winter months arrive.  He raked and mowed and weedeated and gathered and hauled away.  He does an excellent job every time; thank you, T.

I went to K's Boutique and looked around this weekend for some warm winter clothes.  Talked with K. for a long time, and I found a flannel in autumn colors.  Some of her things are pricey, but everything I've ever bought there has been good quality, and I still have.

We've had a few foggy days, and it rained all last week!  It always makes my heart glad when I hear the rain come down on my roof.  Have a splendid October week.

Good morning Sheri. Boy you did get some fog! I’d be a bit nervous as well driving in that on those mountain roads.
I really enjoyed this post - from the pretty flowers to the cookies! Oh that deer, right up to your window. What a view! They sense a good person in you and your yard is a safe place for them. That apple pie looks amazing.
We’re still in the 80’s but come Friday, and the days after could bring rain. We need to clean and organize our garage and next week looks good for that. It needs to be cooler - too hot to be in there going through bins. I’m wishing you a lovely week ahead. Take care.

Good to hear you were safe while driving in the fog. Good of you to support local coffee shops.

Hello Sheri, I agree, driving in the fog is no fun. I had to drive in ice fog, that was so awful. I had to get home. I stayed behind a semi, it was my guiding light, I felt like the driver of that semi knew he was helping me get home.
I enjoyed your post and photos... especially that pie!
Love, Carla

I love the color of your flannel shirt!! It is beautiful. I have been trying to find some at the local Goodwills, but flannel is hard to find! Oh, the lavender and the Great White Heron! Wonderful finds! And your flowers are stunning, my favorite being the stunning little pansy! The food all looks wonderful! And what a great shot of the deer you got, she looks quite young.

Good evening! Probably afternoon where you are. That fog around the mountain and being alone would have scared me too.
You know I have never had a pumpkin spiced latte. The lake looks peacefully with the Lavendar and lake. And the roses - picture perfect. I liked the barn birdhouse. The purple pansies. So many beautiful colors. Cream cheese frosting on cookies and that apple pie looked so good. Yummy. And the deer by your home - I would love where you are living, I think. Nothing like that here. Love the flannel - feels so cuddly and I love the color too.
And the schoolhouse - can you imagine how hard it was for teachers - to teach all grades! Of course, the discipline was different then too.

Oh my that is quite a foggy day, but it sounds like a wonderful adventure. Love the plaid shirt and all the goodies you shared. Your post puts me into a autumn mood. I think now I need to bake a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting to have with my tea.

Yikes! That fog was horrendous. I would have been a wreck driving in that. But what a fantastic group of photos. I was especially loving that lavender -- I haven't seen much here this year and I can only imagine what it smelled like! Your baking looks fantastic and the thought of the flannel makes me want to find some now and wrap myself in it. Lovely in every way.

I like foggy days but certainly do not like to drive in fog and especially not on a mountain. It sounds very stressful- glad you made it ok. How beautiful is that lavender, the roses, and the pansy!! It does look like fall - beautiful photos.

The autumnal cover photo is very beautiful.
What a peaceful and idyllic place to enjoy a pumpkin spice latte. Today you're showing such beautiful photos again, the roses, the birdhouse, delightful.
Like you, I also think it's important to have a cozy home, it's my sanctuary.
I wish you a wonderful week.

The lavender looks wonderful. I remember going to a lavender "farm" over here with acres of lavender growing everywhere. They had every type of the plant and you could buy some in small pots.

The pie looks delicious. Please leave a piece next to your computer for the next time I call round.

God bless.

Good Tuesday Morning Sheri....What a beautiful quote and one that I am going to print. Puts things in perspective of what our homes should represent. We rarely get fog around here, but when we do, it is so very thick. I try to avoid going out when it is around. The little coffee shop sounds sound inviting. Wish I were out there enjoying a nice Latte' right along with you. We could really get some talking done!! I love how you described the quietness of the the pond...we all need this from time to time. Enjoy the wonderful season fo Fall this week...meanwhile, we are in the 90's and it does not feel at all like the season has changed around here. Take care and big hugs to you

I am like you - enjoy the fog from the safety of home but to drive in it - that is another story! So glad the good Lord kept you safe. Also hope that treat of pumpkin latte and bagel with cream cheese rewarded you for the white knuckle trip up the mountain! Yum - Pumpkin cookies with cream cheese icing is a favorite - may just stir up a batch in the next coming weeks. Nel's apple pie looks absolutely divine - next to ice cream this is my favorite dessert! Your photos are gorgeous. To think pansies are still at the greenhouse makes my heart happy. No one around here has them available. Well friend have a lovely autumn day. Hugs!

Your flannel shirt with the orange color is gorgeous and as you said, quality will last many years. I can imagine it lasting 20 years! You found a pretty lake to sit at. I like fog too, rather romantic, but not driving up a mountain road.

I never minded fog, when I was young. But boy has that changed. Specially after this one year. Hubby and I headed north to see the Sandhill Cranes...it is at least a two hour drive. There are two roads that go north...we sometimes take the two lane one for a change of scenry, but that day we took the four lane highway because of the fog. And the we were just plain crazy to go anywhere in it. At one point there is a wind turbine right beside the southbound lanes and it was not visible. Anyway On the way home, we went to this diner in the town that the two lane comes out, and they were telling us that morning there had been a pile up on the two lane road. I forget how many cars were involved, But every ambulance for miles around had to be called in.

So much fun in your post and wonderful pics. I would love to have that sweet little coffee shop nearby to visit. Cute and coffee too. It sounds as though that fog was truly scary. So glad you kept your calm and prayed for safety - you made it!

I love a good foggy morning but in the comfort of my home or a quiet country road and walking, not driving, with no other traffic. But sometimes there's no getting away from it. So glad your trip to the DMV was uneventful. Thank you for sharing all those lovely photos from your week, the deer are always a beautiful sight, and all those yummy things you have been making. I like your new top. It’s true, sometimes when I spend more on an article of clothing, they last for years. The only problem is I have photos with the same outfit that pop up frequently and it gives me a chuckle. I tend to get attached to favorites that come with memories. I can place myself at a time or place quite often when I see them and have such a hard time downsizing when the time comes. Thank you for another wonderfully newsy post and I hope your week is a great one.

I can't think of much scarier than driving in thick fog. I always slow down, but there are some rebel drivers who think of fog as a challenge that scare me. The pie shot did me in...I'm headed to pinterest next to find a good recipe. Have a great weekend. Blessings!
