The girls at Red Rose Alley love our Greek heritage.
The cold winter weather calls for comfort food. How about we make a batch of pastitsio?
Saute some chopped onions in olive oil, add in a pound of lamb, season with garlic, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, and cayenne until the smell of spices fill the kitchen, then add a can of crushed tomatoes, salt and pepper, and simmer.
Make a bechamel sauce by heating up some milk and heavy cream, and adding it to a mixture of melted butter and flour. Stir in some nutmeg, salt, pepper, and Parmesan cheese, and when it's nice and bubbly, add a couple eggs, some Greek yogurt, and whisk!
Add a box of cooked elbow pasta (al dente) to the tomato sauce mix and then spread the bechamel.
Bake for an hour and serve hot with steamed veggies or a crisp salad.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a plate to tend to...

Hello, I love to eat too. Your pastitsio looks delicious. Kind of like a lasagna? Thanks for sharing your recipe. pastitsio
long long ago my aunt made something similar every christmas eve .. except the filling was in pastry. my serbian family was originally from a village near the greek border .. perhaps borrowing the greek flavor and style of this dish and carrying it to the 'new land.' ♥

I never tried Greek food before, so thanks for sharing the recipe! Enjoy!
Nel, It looks good and sounds tasty. Hope you are having some left over for later. When I make a big dish, I always want more a day or two later. LOL. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

it's my children favorite food pastisio ....youre pastisio
looks great ...lot of greetings from Greece
Even the name 'pastitsoi' makes my mouth water.
Great, professional culinaria pictures!
Nel, your pastitsio looks perfect! And it's the real deal - with béchamel instead of just cheese on top - yum! I just pulled a loaf of my wild yeast sourdough out of the oven an hour ago - it would be so good to have a plate of pastitsio to go with it!
That sounds delicious! We have a Greek festival in Portland, OR every October and they serve amazing food.
Oh, my, this is making me so, so hungry! It looks delicious, too.
Nel, you sure know how to cook! Beautiful job on the pastitsio. I've never made it and only eaten it at the Greek Festival. ♥
Holy pasta- you lost me with all those ingredients! Wow! It sounds like a wonderful dish...wish I could smell it- you need a scratch and sniff dot to add to your recipes! Yum! Seriously, I have never eaten a real Greek dish in my life. Now I've just got to find a restaurant, because I don't know a single person who can cook Greek dishes.
That looks SO GOOD! I've never, ever had Greek food!
I've seen this recipe in some church cookbooks (my favorites!) but yours has different spices and the lamb so I'm thinking YOURS must be the best! I've not cooked with lamb but would like to try it. Thanks for sharing - looks SO good!
Sounds quite scrumptious, not something I’ve heard of before xx
sounds like comfort food. yummy.
Oh my Nel, that looks great. I have never cooked lamb. Not sure that I have even eaten it. I love to bake, cooking not so much! haha...and when I cook, I love simple, fast and totally EASY! Mac and cheese comes to mind! haha...have a great day.
Looks delicious! I don't eat red meat... actually very little turkey or chicken but I could substitute for ground turkey and give it a try! Thanks for sharing :-) Have a wonderful week!
Blessings,
Jill
aahh, my favorite Greek dish. It looks great, Nel, but I think I've had mine with ground beef. I bet Renecke loved it.
I can almost smell it! Looks delicious and very hearty.
It looks so good. My hubby grew up with neighbors that were Greek, so he is always telling me of the wonderful food they enjoyed. I can see why he has such fond memories of the dishes,
Nonie
