Waving Me Down

One Sunday when I was driving out of my neighborhood, I saw an old man waving me down as I passed by.  I slowed down but didn't stop because I didn't know him.  He was carrying a cane and didn't speak English too well.  He kept rambling on about something, and I thought he was saying that he needed a ride to his church.   A short while later a car drove by, and the couple said that he lives in our neighborhood and they know him, and gave him a ride to his church.  I thanked them and explained that I couldn't really understand what he was saying.  So, last Sunday I saw the man again.  I was going to give him a ride to his church, but he said a friend was on his way to pick him up.  I apologized for the last time, and we started talking for awhile.  This old man is outgoing, dresses very nice, and is a distinguished looking gentleman.    His church is the Egyptian church down the road, and I mentioned to him that I went to their festival last summer and it was fun.

My mom was fascinated with the Egyptian culture, and really felt connected to it.  She even visited there in her 70's.

So, the next time I see the old man in the neighborhood, I won't hesitate to give him a ride.  : )

I still think you were wise, not to pick him up, the first time. Later, when you had found out more about him, ok.

It may be a sad fact, but our first duty is to our own safety. Especially in today's world.

Nice that you have made a new friend. The right way... By learning more about him, first.

At least, imho. :-)

Be careful Sheri. There are so many people that are bad that it makes it hard for the good people. Especially a woman alone, you just never know what could happen.

I am a victim of a violent crime, so I am always very careful. But I am so glad that you found out that he is a good person, just be careful.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hugs,
Mary

A sweet story. A wonderful gesture. Transportation is hard to come by for many as they age and can no longer drive. The festival sounded lovely.

Hi Sheri,
What a sweet post! I have always loved Egyptian Art.
I think it was wise not to pick up a man that you did not know the first time around.. I would be very hesitant. But it was so kind of you to offer him a ride when you saw him again...
blessings dear friend.
Enjoy your weekend.

Sheri, you are wise to carefully consider who you allow in your car. I certainly wish this weren't true. I enjoy Egyptian culture as well. It must have been a wonderful festival. The food looks great! ♥

Dear Sheri,

Good idea not picking up people unless you know them - sad but true.
Loved the story

My dear one! HELLO! I think I left too early this morning to catch your post! I LOVE THIS! Your storytelling is very special to me. You always celebrate specific moments that otherwise could just be over overlooked by the busy citizen. But you do what a poet does: you notice and report. I love this.

ANd, I see your comment on my blog! You know, I just emailed you and told you that daisies were my mom's favorite flower. I think to honor your mom, have daisies planted in your garden. And if you do and every time you look at them, remember that my mom loved them, and so do I.

You are a very kind person Sheri, but I am pleased you were also cautious when first approached by this man. We all know how important it is to watch out for our own safety. Now that you know a little more, you have made a new and interesting friend. Love that pic of Liz Taylor as Cleopatra. That is one of my favourite old movies. xx

Sheri I enjoyed this post and I too enjoy Egytian history and art. Personally I think being cautious with strangers is the wise decision. My Aunt was stabbed in a parking lot 30 years ago being kind and answering a question from an evil man.

I don't blame you for not stopping the first time to give him a ride as it can be dangerous out there. It is nice that you got to know him now and you feel comfortable with giving him a ride when he needs one. I think the Egyptian culture is fascinating too!

Oh Karen, that's not Nel or Jess in the pic. It's a nice young lady who let me take her picture at the Egyptian festival. :)

What a sweet story. We have people like that around here but you did the right thing in being cautious. Hugs and love, xo

Well, it was a good idea to wait first and not pick him up, it could always be a dangerous situation. But I'm glad you got to know him a little and might help him out. Have a great weekend and feel free to stop by, xoxo
