A Letter In The Mail

I love receiving hand written letters or notes in the mail.  The other day, my mother-in-law sent me one, and it was four pages long!  My mother-in-law is 87 years old, so you can imagine how surprised and pleased I was to get this thoughtful letter.

She wrote about what she's been doing lately, and the happenings of the family.  When I finished reading it, I had a big smile on my face.

I love my mother-in-law, and she has been a part of my life for 36 years.  She's a wonderful woman with a big heart and much knowledge.  Can you believe she had 10 children?

How will our children
know who they are
if they don't know
where they come from?
~John Steinbeck

It brightened my day when I got a letter in the mail from her, and these orange roses are for her.

Do you ever get hand written notes or cards in the mail any more?

How wonderful to receive a handwritten letter, 4 pages long and all this written by your mother-in-law! I must admit that in times of cell-phones, short messages and emails personally hand-written letters have become very rare! But of course I keep all the letters received in a box - very old-fashioned :).
Have a nice weekend,
Barbara

I LOVE to write letters, but for years now, an email is so much easier to write, and a blog comment so much more FUN since it's usually done en masse. But a handwritten letter, though a lost art in my life, still is one of the sweetest and personal gifts you could receive.

Much love. Anita

I love to receive a hand written letter, whether it's long or short. It is a lost art these days with email.
Your mother-in-law sounds like a wonderful woman.
Have a great weekend.

The handwritten note will brighten anyone's smile!
We seem to be so complacent these days and figure time is in such short supply, an email (or gasp a text!) is good enough.
Kudos to your MIL for reminding all of us the effect of caring enough to write without the use of electronics!
Chosing a nice stationary used to be such a personal thing...Adding this to my list of purchases when next going to the mainland!
Thanks!
Blessings,

What a special treat to receive this precious letter, Sheri. It is rare these days that I receive a hand-written letter, though sometimes a post-card turns up. We really have embraced the electronic version, and I write and receive many emails every day. Lovely images, especially the lady reading, just beautiful.

They really do seem to be a thing of the past in our tech-oriented world. I wish more writing was reinforced w/ school children, but many schools don't even teach cursive anymore, they go straight to typing. It will soon be a forgotten art form, and then kids won't even be able to read the constitution. I love the beautiful script on really old letters- where it is so precise and even and you can tell the writer really took their time to make it beautiful. And everyone saved their letters, too. All of them were treasures.

Hello, Sheri ! That letter is lovely and don't start me on those perfect roses ! I only ever receive hand-written mail from my 86 year-old mother and from my best friend, whom I've known since prep school; believe me, that was a looong time ago ... I am the first culprit though, I have a tendency to write only e-mails, I love them !xx

Those orange roses my dear are just special. Very rare is it for me to see them, and when I do, they are unique.

JE T'AIME! Ah yes, the phrase that everyone wants to know, speak and write. I hope my students will

Aimer la langue française enough to work hard all year, learn about themselves and how working diligently can take them places they never expected -it did for me.

What a lovely little tale of happiness sent through the mail. Your roses are sunny and gorgeous. Swoon! I do get notes here and there. My favorites are the cards I get from my husband (though he doesn't mail them). He writes the best cards and they are the first thing I would grab in a fire. :)
Happy long weekend my friend.

He was on an Army base and I became an Army wife. You talk about writing letters and receiving them, between myself, my mom and my mother in law we kept the postal service in business. lol I miss those days so much.. So happy you received that letter. Hope you've had a nice Labor Day Weekend, hugs, xo

What a treasure, Sheri. There is nothing like a handwritten note or letter. I still exchange them, thanks to my blogging friends. It is one of my favorite things about blogging. I have a shoe box where I keep every single one I receive and every now and then I like to sit back and go through them. They are so special to me.
Beautiful roses, beautiful post, beautiful friend.

I cringe at the thought of not teaching cursive in the schools any longer.

I call precious handwritten letters "artkeep".

Hi Sheri, This posting is sooo sweet! I believe we need to send more notes and letters to our loved ones and friends....it's a beautiful and personal thing to do! It's became a lost art! Thank you for your prayers, and I will pray for your re-occurring illness. In Jesus name...I pray, whatever this illness is..it must go! It doesn't belong in Sheri's temple (body)...no weapon formed against her shall prosper! Now Sheri, accept your HEALING...regardless of symptoms...Keep saying and believing By his stripes, I am healed! Blessings~~~Roxie

Hello Sheri,
This is such a nice post! I rarely receive handwritten letters or notes in the mail anymore, but it's a very lovely surprise when I do! Your mother-in-law reminds me of my 88 year old Aunt. Thank you, Sheri, for your recent visit to my blog and your very sweet comments! I enjoyed reading them so much! I'm doing very well...I just can't seem to get back into blogging right now. It was really nice hearing from you, though, and your thoughts made me smile! Big Hugs, Cindy

What a lovely surprise to receive in the mail. I love "real" mail and it's such a thing of the past. Two weeks ago my hubby and I spoke in our church on giving service. In the week following we received *two* handwritten thank you notes and they were pure delight! They are keepers in a way no electronic form of communication can ever be! What a sweet mother-in-law you have been blessed with!

Hi Sheri,

I think the art of letter writing as gone by the wayside. With e-mail, Facebook and all the other multi-media ways to keep in touch it seems that people have lost the desire to sit down, with pen in hand, to write a letter.

Years ago I use to write letters to my mother-in-law and she and her sister used to write bi-weekly. They could have very easily called on the telephone and chatted but both preferred the written letter to telephone calls. I think it is wonderful that your mother-in-law is still writing to you and just think years from now you will have those letters to look at again and again. :-)

Sheri,

Wow! That must have been quite a surprise! Hand written letters are a lost art. I do, however, receive handwritten cards but not as often as I used to. With the electronic world that we live in, I hope the art of a handwritten letter or note never disappear completely. While going through boxes of old photographs, I found many of the handwritten notes that my sisters and I wrote to my mom because she saved them. It was a nice surprise. The orange roses are perfect for fall!
