Jazz Kitchen

Spicy Creole food on the stove...

bright purple, green, and yellow beads...

brassy notes of jazz and blues...

It must be Mardi Gras! Though this fun and festive holiday is typically not celebrated by most Californians, we break out the beads each year in honor of one of our favorite cities in the world--New Orleans!

This year we stuffed our bellies with shrimp étoufféand red beans and rice. We got the recipe from one of the yummiest spots in New Orleans, the world famous Gumbo Shop

We also made some traditional king cake with purple, green, and yellow Mardi Gras sprinkles!

Cheers to Fat Tuesday!

  1. Hey girls, pass the tums...LOL. I would love some of that spicy food. That is the reason I would love to visit New Orleans, the food. Well and the buildings. Blessings to you, xoxo,Susie

  2. Show some mercy for the souls who packed lunch to work this morning in a brown bag ahahahah
I love Spicy, I love Seafood so I'd be great in New Orleans... or your home.
Once I read a novel and the story went in New Orleans and I surrendered to their ways. So if I ever cross Atlantic I'm heading there and it might even cure my distaste for Carnival ahahahah
    Wishing you fun filled days,
    Teresa

  16. That's my kind of eating!

I happened to feature a no knead bread today on my blog that would go very well with your spicy gumbo! I would love to know how to make that!

I got the baby two years in a row when a coworker who went to school in New Orleans ordered King Cakes for our department. The cakes reminds me of coffee cakes.

  22. It looks like you had a fun time and quite a feast there. Everything looks so tasty and colourful. We had our traditional pancakes which I love with lemon juice and sugar and we ate far too many of them! No wonder Shrove Tuesday is often referred to here as Pancake Tuesday!
