The Creepy Old House

When I was growing up, there was a house in the neighborhood that looked somewhat spooky, and when a new family moved into the house, they appeared to be a strange, but nice one.  I eventually made friends with the girl who lived in the house.  They let us use their back garage, and my brother and his friend, Kenny, made us a haunted house.  All the kids came to see the spooky haunted house when it was ready.  I'll never forget the fun we had growing up in that neighborhood.  I had about five friends and four cousins who lived up the street, and one of the friends just passed away (love you, Linda).  That was one of the most memorable Halloweens of my childhood, spending time at the creepy old house.

My mom sewed all of my Halloween costumes, but when I got older they were store bought.  Not all of my costumes were scary though.  ; )

It was a time when us kids used our imagination, staying outside as long as we could, building dirt forts, doing theatre plays for our parents, and putting together haunted houses.  When I'm in the area, I sometimes drive by that old house, and for a short moment I hear the sound of the kids running about, grins on their faces, whispering, "it's Halloween!"

The grandchildren love Halloween and I hope like you they may look back in years to come at visiting houses and sharing the fun of the season ... something a little spooky is great!

All the best Jan

Sheri, Mommy let us go trick or treating a few times...we always made up costumes. In school, I remember making a face on a paper bag and we would wear those...isn't that ridiculous. LOL I used to make my girls costumes also. Sounds like you had some really fun times in the old neighborhood. You are cute in your bunny suit. :) Blessings, xoxo, love, Susie

Dear Sheri,

Such wonderful childhood memories you shared, and loved seeing your photos, great photo of you. Times were lovely back then, and could relate to building huts and playing outdoors until it got dark.

I think that every one of us can say, "Those were the good old days!" I too remember the simplicity of getting dressed up, getting candy, and having limits as to where we could go, and how late we could stay out. Those really were good times.

Sweet photos and memories. I wish children played outdoors and used their imaginations like that again.

What great memories. I can remember living in a subdivision that had about 300 homes....we hit just about everyone of them on Halloween! haha...it was so much fun. Thanks for reminding me about those times. I still love Halloween. I still dress up and I love giving out the candy.

memories are treasure that we never want to lost dear Sheri!

your post reminded me our neighbourhood back in my village when i was less than 12 , they had only daughter as it was their late child so parents were quite old as sometime one think as they were her grandparent instead of parents.
our own house was under construction and we were living in a quite huge house of my grand parents which was gifted by my mom by his father but she did not accept it and later gave it to her younger brother who was married and hade five kids.

girl from my neighbourhood was pretty much spoiled by the extra love and care from her parents .
i used to peek in mornings from our wall on holidays and see how the old lady prepare breakfast for her and wake her up so gently unlike my mom who was loving though but owned strict rules and always give us direction what to do and what not .

later when i was in 8th grade her parent made her merry as they thought life is unpredictable so it is good to settle their daughter down .

Unfortunately she was divorced after few months because she knew nothing about household and her in laws were quite strict .

i still remember her excitement when she was getting married and showing me everything (new clothes jewelry) with enthusiasm .

Is that you in Photo dear Sheri?

you are so BEAUTIFUL,no costume could make you scary but CHARMING only!!!

Sounds like a really great childhood memory. :-) How neat to be a part of the creepy old house, lol ;-) Cute bunny costume too. We enjoy Halloween here as well, though the holidays are different this year since losing my mom. I appreciate your kind words on my blog, just trying to get through each day the best that I can. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Blessings,
Jill

Hahaha! Those WERE the days, right? At the risk of sounding like my mother, those really WERE simpler times. We mostly just made our costumes out of what we could find, you know, the witches and 'bums' were pretty popular. Or the 'old lady' and 'old man'. LOL - great memories!!

I love the throw back pics. Thanks so much for mentioning me in the other blog post. It seems I'm being tested around every twist and turn this month, so sorry for the absence to your blog. Even though I don't visit I keep all my blogging sisters close to my heart.
