I See It, There It Is

Friends and family often ask me why I'm not on all the social media sites, and I try to explain to them, but my reasoning is never good enough.  I can't really explain it myself, it's just a feeling I have.  I was at the bank yesterday and one of the first ones in line.  I glance back at the people standing in line, and four of them had their heads down staring at their phones.  People don't look up any more.  The one-on-one conversations are slowly diminishing because they are so busy interacting through other means of communication.   So, while I'm wondering how it is that I'm going to explain to loved ones why I'm not a social media butterfly,

I see it,
there it is,
sitting right in the center
of the shop,
exuding all and everything
I'd like to say
in just eight little words,
a beacon of wisdom

Darling,  thank you for reminding me to be true to myself, despite the many attempts to lure me into the social media world.   My little blog is all the social media I need.  My wish for you in the new year is simple.

BE YOU.
You are unique
You are wonderful
You are loved

(My candle is from Anthropologie
if you'd like to get one for yourself).

Sheri, That is an adorable candle. I am not into all the media whirl either. I get crazy around one of my sisters who is looking at everything, getting caught up in it all. Yikes. I will look at other's photos if they ask me to ...but I don't need to check in when I am out. Blessings to you my sweet friend for a very happy new years...enjoy this evening. xoxo, love, Susie

You're not alone in this. I'm also not on social media sites and I too dislike the phenomenon of heads down with people staring at their smartphones.

I'm a lover of all sorts of candles, and this in your post is a very nice one. May its flame lighten your life with the best of all things in the new year 2017!

I have a stupid phone. My friend just sent me her old smart phone. It's not that old and it can do all those smart things. I do have a pay-as-you-go cell phone for when I travel, just to be safe on the road. I haven't activated the new phone. I don't want to be tempted. Not that I think I would but it seems a lot to pay for... every now and then I think it would be useful to check a map or if traveling. But...

I do Facebook but I tend to post more than read. I don't get the rich satisfaction I do from blogging, "knowing" people, what they love and feel and care about. In my former job I had to do social media as part of it -- including Twitter which I HATED! I don't Instagram. I blog and I 'book and that's more than enough for me. Life is too short!

Last summer I was alone at a restaurant and two women sat down at the table near mine, glanced at the menu and both whipped out their phones. No thank you. If I'm there with a friend, I want to talk! You are SO not alone!

I watched a movie where a little girl was on stage for her cello recital, but when she looked at her family in the audience they were ignoring her - all busy with their smart phones. I still have a not-too-smart phone and I am okay!!

Oh, how true Sheri! It saddens my heart to see how disconnected so many families are from their loved ones simply because they are so engaged with conversations and such online... I am thankful for limited internet, a not-so-smart-phone and plenty busyness to keep me away from social media! One of the best things I did this year was delete my Facebook account! Thank you for the sweet and gracious reminder...
Happy 2017 - may it be a wonderfully blessed one for you and your family!
And thank you for your lovely comment on my blog...I am so thrilled to have you along for the journey and I look forward to stopping by Red Rose Alley more often...I just love the name! {{smiles}}
Love and blessings!

This post is right on, dear Sheri! I couldn't agree with you more. What a shame that that folks are so involved with looking at their phones and missing out on living! Happy New Year, my friend. ♥

Well Sheri dear, anyone would think I'd copied some of your thoughts in my current post but I promise you that I scheduled it yesterday. So it's truly just a matter of like kindred minds thinking alike!

And I have tried to enter other social media, my future daughter-in-law signed me up on instragram but I still can't figure it out or believe it's for me, likewise other media. I do FB as a way to keep up with kids, grandchildren, sisters but I wish I had the nerve to plead with people in a restaurant to turn their cells off.

Happy new year and a blessed one,
Dewena

What a beautiful candle! And one of the things I hate most is listening to other people's 'private' conversations. I feel so weird hearing some of the things they say for everyone to hear! I wonder if anyone else knows how to turn the ringer off of their phone! Happy new year sweet friend. Hugs, Diane

We are kindred spirits. I also only do my blog post and I do a little of Instagram. I feel exactly as you do. People no longer stop and SEE the real world around them.
Well said, thank you for sharing.

And!!! My New Year's Resolution is to BE ME. I wrestle with some feelings like I need to be something or someone else to fit in. It is a battle I have faced forever it seems. As I have grown up and as time continues, I have learned more and more to BE ME, it is a-okay to be me.

Thank you for this post!! Carla

HERE HERE. I only have Instagram for the sake of developing my photography (it's a great platform to great a gallery) and my blog is, well, defunt. But I enjoy THIS, the communication that I can engage in with YOU and others who care. We were at a dinner party last week and one young man there was sitting with all of us in the front room, but he must have a special watch that is like a mini phone because the entire time we were all chatting, he was sitting there with his head down, looking at his watch and thumbing the screen down and down....just like one does with a phone. I saw on the news yesterday that in Sweden, there are yellow signs off the road (much like what we have here for deer crossings or school crossings) but these signs have images of PEOPLE WALKING with their heads down, looking at their phones! Imagine that, road signs warning drivers of pedestrians who are NOT AWARE of their surroundings.

Well dear one, I said long ago that I can't be like everyone else, and it's cost me on the job and elsewhere. But ya know what?I wouldn't have it any other way. I want to be me.

May 2017 continue to bring us both wisdom and compassion.

We each have to choose our 'social media' and what we are happy with.

One thing I'm not happy with is constantly seeing people looking at their phones, pressing the buttons, touching their screen, swiping it ...etc. etc. concentrating on the phone instead of the world that surrounds them.

Perhaps I'm just a little bit old fashioned !

Happy New Year Wishes

All the best Jan

I love this adorable little candle! I have just within the past few months upgraded to a smart phone. I do enjoy facebook and our blogs but you will not catch me getting out my phone in a restaurant or where ever and looking at it. I don't get it either...PLUS...the screen is just too dang small! LOL! Happy New Year, Sheri!

Dear Sheri,

Love the candle and the glowing light from it and the message, so true.
So many young people spend all their time on their phones, walking around the streets glued looking down. I am not on face book and find I spend enough time with my blog and this is enough for me.
Happy New Year to you dear friend and your family and thanks for all you share and your friendship.
Warm wishes for 2017
hugs
Carolyn

I got you completely, social media takes a lot of your quality time with the family. I also would like to cut down on my involvement with it. Such a good self-control on your part and that mug speaks volume, love it. Happy New Year Sheri!!!
