Sand. Paint. Reapply.

Do you have a project you've been wanting to get to? Something that's been on your mind for a while, but you just haven't had time to start? Something you've been putting off for weeks, months, maybe even years?

I've had this dresser...well...for ever! I know my mom passed it down to me at some point. Honestly, I'm not even sure how long she had it before giving it to me, but it's been in the family for as long as I can remember.

This dresser has special meaning to me. I've moved around a lot...13 times over the last 16 years! And this dresser is the only piece of furniture I've carried with me each and every place. But after so many years of traveling, my poor dresser was starting to show signs of wear and tear. So I decided a makeover was in order.

I bought a few sanding blocks and some paint and went to work!

Okay, so that makes it sound easy, which it SO wasn't! After watching all the DIY YouTube videos I could find, I bought an electric sander I had no idea how to use. It made weird squiggly lines on the wood, and I was sure the whole thing was going to be ruined! So I switched to sandpaper blocks, and, huffing and puffing, rubbed the whole piece down. And then I got to the drawers...

How does an amateur refurbisher manage exquisite detail like this? Sand. Paint. Reapply. Hope for the best!

A few finishing touches...

and voilĂ  !

This formerly shabby dresser is the chic new centerpiece of my bedroom.

If you have a project you've been putting off, why not start it today? And be sure to let us know how it goes!

Only yesterday my mother painted a dresser we got at the antique show. It's amazing what a little makeover can do. (Although she still has to replace the knobs on it).

I really love the color of the paint you selected. You did a really great job.

You did a magnificent job! I'm getting the urge to paint some furniture. Unfortunately, I don't want to paint anything in my house and I'm not sure I have room for more. But when I see something like this I get all excited and motivated! Terrific!

Nel, this took a lot of work on your part. You did a great job, and I really like the color you chose. I think grandma would be pleased with it. It belonged to her, you know? This dresser was in grandma and grandpa's room for years before it ended up in mine. :)

Beautiful! Love the color you chose. Refinishing furniture properly is not an easy task. I leave it to Mr G due to allergies, and because I get so impatient.
Okay, moved T H I R T E E N time in 16 years?!? I'm here falling apart from moving twice the last three, with yet another move in the horizon next year. Whenever my legs begin to wobble I'll think of you, Nel, and brave on. ;)

I love how that turned out! I have an antique side table/magazine rack that I would love to paint. The thought of sanding scares me to death! lol
