A New School Year For Jess

Well, school has started and Jess is back teaching her grade school students for the year.  She said the first week went pretty well, and she thinks she will have a good bunch of kids this year.  The parents seem to be involved too.  Every year is different she said.

I remember going to kindergarten the first day.  Girls usually know who they want to be friends with right away.  Me and a friend started talking, and right away we became best friends.  Her name was Tina, and she was the prettiest thing.  We remained best friends all through eighth grade.

I always wanted a red plaid lunch pail and thermos.   But of course, I just had the regular brown lunch bags that my mom would pack every day.  She filled them with good and wholesome foods, hardly ever twinkies, ho hos, and other store bought goodies.

Nel was always an excellent student.  She was teased by this one bully girl one year because I always walked her to the bus stop and made sure she got on it.  But boy, did she stand up for herself one day, and after that, no more bullying.  ; )  Jess was a very good student as well, made friends quickly, and still has the same best friend that she had in kindergarten.  Now, my son didn't like school much, as most boys don't, and he was tearful every day in the beginning of his kindergarten year.  It got better as the years passed, and he made very good grades, played sports, and would you believe he still has the same best friend that he had in kindergarten?

Oh, those school days.
Do you have any stories
about grade school
that you'd like to share?
I'd love to hear.

The new school year brings back mixed emotions for many. I love the plaid lunch box, Sheri. I hope your daughter has a great year ahead. My grandsons are great students, but really don't want the summer to be over. They start school after Labor Day and our oldest grandson started his college year last week. Have a nice week ahead. ♥

Sheri, School days were not so great for me most times...as I was a very poor kid and most kids were never taught not to make fun of others. I was blessed years later when my own girls did make lots of friends and still have most of them to this day. But I let kids feel welcome at my house. We have such wonderful memories of good times with my daughters and their friends. I am glad you found a great friend and your children did also. I am not saying that my girls never got picked on , because they did...I just kept encouraging them to tell the teacher and make peace with the kid. Oh yes, I have called parents and teachers. LOL My daughter Angie that teaches...will not allow one kid to ever pick on another...she teaches them social skills...your Jess will be doing this also. Many parents are leaving the rearing of their children up to the village. Blessings, love you, xoxo, Susie

Lovely to read your memories and lovely to see the boys ... or should I say young men ... with their surf boards.

School days were great,I played in a lot of the sports teams and enjoyed my time at school with my friends ... and yes, I still remain in touch with a few of them.

The grand-children do not start back at school until next week, but all uniforms, lunch boxes, school kit is ready!

All the best Jan

I remember Bobby Burgess picking on me and my mom said I would cry all the way home and she could hear me coming down the street. "It's getting louder," the neighbor would tell her and she knew to just let me come!

Like your son, one of my dearest friends is one I have known since I was five and she was four. Actually, we met a year or two earlier -- that was when they moved away. Such a sweet treasure.

Great post. The only thing I remembered - we had moved to a farm in Ohio the beginning of my freshman year and I hated it. Had to ride the school bus and didn't know a soul. I was so scared and this very nice boy named Frank said sit with me and we became great friends. Not boy friend and girl friends, just a nice friend. I hated that school as I wanted to be back in high school in Cleveland, where I didn't have to ride the school bus. LOL

Have a great Labor Day Weekend.

Hugs

I enjoyed this! I remember having a very important looking book satchel. I was one of the first babies born at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA. and was invited to a party for us kids the year we all started first grade. Their gift to each of us was the book satchel. I taught elementary school for several years. I wish your daughter Jess a great school year.

How fun, thank you for sharing. Sweet post about your kids. I always enjoy that.

School was not easy for me. I have a learning disability. I think kids with learning disabilities are treated much better today. I am thankful for that. I think learning disabilities are diagnosed earlier and we know more about them to help the student.

I struggled with school. Mrs. Jackson a very special teacher noticed and cared enough to find out what was making me struggle. Thank goodness for those extra special teachers who take time for students and do not judge them as not trying.

Dearest Sheri,

School officially started on Monday, and it was exciting. I am teaching sophomores this year at the high school and 7th graders at the middle school. For the sophomores, it's a HUGE transition into the big, intimidating building. They seem to be doing well with the orientation, but are still getting lost as they try to navigate around the building.

As a student, my memories of school are sweet, but I too had to endure bullying. One day however, enough was enough, and I had to stand up for myself, something my mother keep telling me I needed to do.

As a teacher, I've had to do the same thing....I've had to stand up for myself in ways I never imagined I'd need to as an adult, but school is a great place to learn both academic AND social skills. I LOVE SCHOOL!

Hi Shari...Loved your bring-back-memories post! Hope Nel has a great year. When each of my kids went to kindergarten, I bawled my head off. Thought I was going to die without their little hands in mine. But after awhile, I enjoyed the few hours of blessed "freedom." That scenario will probably now be repeated with the grands. Ahhhhh, life is good. Hugs. Susan

Such sweet memories and a big shout-out to Jess for devoting her life to educating our children! Teachers are right up there with the saints in my opinion.....I love that you and your children have kept childhood friends for a lifetime. My own children have done the same, but my husband and I moved away right after high school and lost touch.......I do remember my first day of school. I loved my little plaid dress with the white collar and full skirt. I made a sweet friend that day, twirling around in our almost-matching dresses. I had brown bag lunches, too :) Hugs xo Karen

Sheri, I had a red lunch box just like that when I went to school. The thermos matched and my mom would make me the best lunches in it. I had a big family growing up 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Eventually we started getting lunches in brown bags too. We lived right across from our elementary school growing up so my mother would always walk us across the street. I had wonderful memories. My dad even planted 20 palm trees in a row in front of the school. The school had just opened and there were no trees. We would take our hose from our house and walk across the street and water the palm trees every day. Maybe thats why I have a love for gardening. Thanks for bringing back great memories.
Hugs, Jody ♥

It's nice to reminisce those days and your post inspired me to. I loved grade school than high school, I maybe innocent but it was sweet haha. There's not much bullying unlike high school and everyone was my friend since it was in a small knitted community. Ahh those days :) Always great and interesting topic Sheri!

My favorite memories are of back to school shopping! Momma would always take me "town," and I could pick out 5 new outfits, get a new lunch box and a pair of shoes.
I had the best Mom and Dad!
Have a wonderful weekend, my dear friend.
Love,
Jemma
