The Turtle Dove

Mourning Doves
are also known as
Turtle Doves.

To the Native Americans,
the Mourning Dove
represents communication
with the spirit.

Gypsy folklore believe
that Doves are
messengers of love,
linking our hearts to the
spirit world.

Mourning Doves
represent
peace and safety.

Some Native Americans
believe that the
appearance of the dove was
a sign of rain.

Their call is a
CooOOoo-woo-o sound.

This little fellow
came to me while I was
enjoying nature
one morning, so I took
many pics of him.

Do you see the
Mourning Doves around
your neck of the woods?

Mourning doves are my favorite bird visitors to our feeding stations in our yard. Actually, they are residents, not visitors. I like their soft colors and their personality, they are not aggressive but aggressive birds don't scare them away.

Good evening dear Sheri

He is a beauty! Yes, I have only seen one. I opened the front door and he was nestled in the warm earth under the roses... I had never seen one before then.. Sadly, none since... Thank you for sharing.

They are such sweet and gentle birds. We have lots of them and usually have at least 2-3 nests in our tree in the back yard. I love to listen to them coo.

Great pictures,
Judy

We do have doves in Australia, not sure if the same species but similar. I enjoy them and their calls. Once we had them nesting outside our back door - always two eggs. We watched them raise their little family, which is most enchanting. Nice post Sheri. x

Wonderful photos. We do have Mourning Doves in our area. However, over the years we see fewer and fewer of them. I don't know why. It is nice to way up to their sounds in the morning though.

Good Morning Dearest,
What a joy it is for me to sit here this morning, sip my coffee and enjoy the beauty of this sweet bird.
Yes, we do have many, many Mourning Doves around us.
My husband and I were sitting on our back patio commenting on how many flocks there were. We have a very large ranch behind us and with all of the open fields, I think the doves are very happy!
Love,
Jemma

Mourning doves are so beautiful and we have many of them in our yard most of the time. Their feathers just make them look like satin, they way they lay and they have such beautiful big eyes. Love to hear them coo and these big ol' birds even fly up and eat from our seed feeders...they barely fit on the edge but that doesn't stop them!

Sheri,
Your photographs are intriguing and beautiful. On the morning of my sons service I was met by a mourning dove. I keep a small 4x4 painting of a mourning dove next to his ashes, since then I haven't seen another one. They are very strong and can fly up to 55 MPH, a fast and pretty bird.

Vera

We do have mourning doves, Sheri. They are so sweet and gentle. I had a nesting pair in my cocoa planter one year with 4 little chicks. They made the biggest mess, but it was so interesting to watch them hatch and grow! Lovely post! ♥

You know, I only recall seeing these in California. I never see them here! But now that you have shared this, so much comes to memory. Their call in the morning outside my childhood window. The softness as I touched one that my older half sister had in a cage....so much to remember.

We see them now and then here in MN. Where I grew up in Nebraska, we had many. I love to hear their call. Unfortunately here in MN they still have a hunting season for them in the fall, which makes me sick...

How interesting, Sheri. Our doves are of a slightly different species, I think, and don't look very spiritual.

We do have mourning doves here and I love them so much! When dusk falls is usually when I hear their mournful call. There used to be one that I know communicated with me as it would stay on a low branch and just listen to me as I talked to her--I feel that she was a her!
