The Big D

Dallas, Texas . . .

What a beautiful city.

I had the pleasure of visiting Dallas a few weeks ago for the National First Year Experience Conference, and I was quite impressed.

I presented on some of the programs my office has developed to support first-generation college students. It was a packed house!

You know what they say about all work and no play, though...

So I made sure to reserve some time for sight-seeing. Come along with me on a tour of the "Big D," wont you?

The Old Red Courthouse is now a museum dedicated to the history of Dallas County.

At the JFK Memorial, visitors can pause to pay their respects to former President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated just a few blocks away.

Pioneer Park offers a truly staggering collection of fifty half-ton bronze statues commemorating the 19th century cattle drives along the Shawnee Trail.

Thanksgiving Square is home to beautiful mosaics and the famous Spiral Chapel.

And you can't visit Dallas without a trip to the arts and entertainment district of historic Deep Ellum. This was my favorite neighborhood.

Did I mention how amazing the food was?

Dallas is a rich and interesting city full of history and hidden charms. I hope you enjoyed this little photo tour!

Dear Nel,
First, congratulation on your speech.. Were you nervous? My knees would clank... teee

What a beautiful sight. I have never had the opportunity to visit, so thank you for the photos.
I was in high school, walking down the hall when they announced the assignation of Kennedy. What a tragedy.
This painting by Norman Rockwell is one of my favorites.. The old red Courthouse is simply amazing.
Enjoy your weekend.

Penny

What an incredible PLACE.....wow, that food and the HUGE bronze statutes!

Dearest Sheri, most treasured friend! THANK YOU for coming to visit my post! YES, all those photos are MINE! This summer I will be taking tons of photos to add new ones to my book, and during my spring break at home (week after next), I will be working on my book. Those hydrangeas were from last year, in front of one of my favorite shops in town, and the photo of Italy was from 13 years ago when Ruben and I were there; the shot of FRANCE was the view from the inside of an exquisite toy shop looking out into a courtyard!

Thank you kind and wonderful friend! MUCH LOVE and talk soon? Anita

Great post Nel and the pictures are wonderful. I toured Dallas when I was there. You never know if you will ever be back in that city again when traveling to different cities. It was really strange to be in the book depository where Oswald shot Kennedy. It was wonderful seeing all the information and pictures they had. Also the grassy knoll where people stood and watched Kennedy get killed.
Very strange feeling for me as I watched the hold thing unfold on TV as it was happening,
Sounds like your conference was well received - great job.

Texas is on my bucket list once we retire. Our son went to college in West Texas on a baseball scholarship. The people and the school were truly amazing.

Your career is blooming nicely, Nel. How wonderful it is that you dedicate your life skills to education. Our daughter worked for The College Success Foundation up here in Washington State until her first child was born.
Thank you for sharing your travel and work experience with all of us!
Say hi to your mom for me!

Dear Sheri,
Thank you so much, but to make it clear, I did not BUILT the cabinet. I only constructed the doors and put the glass in.. The cabinet is a built in that was here.. The doors are not perfect, but they are fine for me.. I had always wanted glass doors.. The doors that were on there before were scalloped doors with chicken wire...
Thank you so much for your kind words.
Wishing you all a beautiful week.
blessings,
Penny
