Sound Of The Train

One of the things I liked best about moving to the area I did was the fact that my father AND grandfather lived here.  It's nice to travel and live in different places, but I think it's also very special to live in a place where your ancestors lived.  The very heart of the city surrounds me with their presence.  My grandfather worked for the railroad, and being only a mile away, I can hear the faint sound of the train in the distance when I fall asleep at night.  I think of my father and his father before him who made their way in the very same town I live in.  They are here with me, in mind and spirit (as I am writing this, I looked up and two big white dogs are passing by.)  In a world where people come and go, it's nice to be settled in a place that has so much meaning and history of my loved ones.

Nice post. There's something about living in the area where your family is from - a shared history - that people lose in this day of such a rapidly mobile society.

Sheri, I absolutely love trains. When I lived in town I was right next to the east/west track..I miss hearing the trains. You can hear them faintly out here. My uncle worked the repair crews long ago. He fixed the tracks. My brother Tom drove the trains as he was an engineer. He's retired now. You and I are like spirit sisters.:) You know my sister Jeanie lives near the depot and she just hates the trains and the whistles. She must be totally odd. LOL. Some times the young and the modern world forget how we got where we are today....it's thanks to our forefathers. Blessings, xoxo,Susie...love you rose. :)

I don't live where my ancestors live but I do live right next to two train tracks....they were cut in, in the 1800's. We have a picutre of them working with oxen and our house is in the back ground.

Sounds lovely. My parents had lived very close to where they grew up and their parents grew up, but moved when I was in college as they moved my father's department to a new area. They have lived in the same general area of the country all their lives.

Where I lived before I could hear the train in the distance too and I liked that sound.

I am so happy that you have the connection to your roots, Sheri. One of the things I loved living in the mountains when I was a kid was that on a cold, crisp winter night you could hear the train's whistle down in the valley-about 12 miles away. It was a comforting sound to me somehow.

Wonderful post- xo Diana

Oh Sheri I love this post. Your words hit home with all of us. My grandma's house was next to RR tracks, they were what was called "slow tracks" and you would wake up to the slow "singing" of the wheels on the tracks in the morning. My mom & dad's house backed up to "fast tracks" and we would sometimes see one of my two uncles that that would blow the train whistle and wave as they would go by. One was an engineer on the NYC and one was a yardman for the B&O but sometimes would be on the trains and he would blow the caboose whistle. I adored them both. Thank you for the wonderful memories Sheri!!!

Blessings & hugs, Edie Marie

Sheri, I enjoy being in places with that family connection. I'm too sentimental for my own good! :D And I do love hearing the sound of a train in the distance at night.

I'm just enjoying spending some time catching up on your posts after my holiday! I can fully appreciate why you would like to live in a town where your family also lived. I also returned to my home town a good few years ago. I lived away when I was a student and also spent a year in France. Some of my school friends also returned and I appreciate being able to meet up with them too.

Trains have a lot of special meaning in my family too. My uncle who passed away collected model trains. Thank you for sharing your special memories, which in turn triggered mine! xo

That is very beautiful. I absolutely love it when a location has a history and story behind it, it adds so much.

Wonderful post! I love the sound of a distant train. Something comforting about it... not really sure why. We lived near, but not too-near train tracks, maybe that's why, brings up old memories!

Dear Sheri,

You have shared a lovely post and enjoyed reading and seeing your photos.
My daughter and I took a train the other day out to a shopping center and it was a lovely adventure.
Could have taken the car but we just wanted to have some fun.
Many thanks for the kind visit and note you left me, I appreciate this very much.
Hope you are enjoying the weekend
hugs

Oh Sheri, I do understand what a bittersweet time that is. I am so sorry for your loss. Indeed this special man was family for most of your lifetime. Take time to nurture yourself and rest after caring for others as I know you do. Hugs today,
xx, Heather
